Repairing Old Das Keyboard

Long story short:  Das Keyboard, Mk.1 with busted USB plug.  Cut off cord, soldered on Sparkfun supplied micro-USB plug, and… ten attempts, failing to enumerate the device.  

Seemed like the ground was uninsulated, and in contact with the shielding.  Is this bad?

The PS2 cables I've cut up was like that - thought that was normal. If you're talking about the "cable ground", that is. The other ground should be insulated.

No, it's the ground that's supposed to be insulated that's bare.
