Cherry MX Red Key Grittiness?
« on: Fri, 28 October 2011, 19:23:32 »
I just got my new KBC poker today and the key switches are kinda gritty. A lot less smooth than I imagined. I'm Basically wondering if the keys break in, and the grittiness goes away. I'm really liking the board though. Pretty much has all the functions of a normal keyboard. I was expecting to not be able to control alt delete and stuff like that.

the pcb mounted feel 100% different than the plate-mounted ones. I personally don't like the pcb-mounted ones. The plate-mounted ones do feel like a cloud of boobs though

I have a kBC  poker reds and they dont feel gritty( but I did buy it used, so not sure how many hours it was used before I got it) ... feel similar to my other reds, minus the plate. For me Browns is what I think of Gritty for reference...

They honestly feel as gritty as browns. maybe I'm crazy or something. BTW, how much different do plate mounted reds feel?

To me it feels a little bit more solid, but thats my opinion.

This from typing on my filco reds, cm storm and havent tried out my leopold reds yet but expect the same kinda feel.

Plate-mounted definitely feels more solid. It feels "heavier" too. The pcb -mounted ones are VERY light.

I have a shiny new Leopold with reds and it is as smooth as butter.  I have also used pre-owned (ghetto) reds on a PCB mounted keyboard and they too were grittless.

Maybe it's the plate, but my CMstorm reds feel smooth. Even my ancient WYSE 50 (black) keys are smooth-feeling. H'm. The browns are a little "gritty" on the way down, but I like that little bit of tactility, to remind me, though I bottom out less on the reds.

Kindda funny, the Poker red you got from me is the same one I got from noodles. I bought it for the clear caps.

So why would the surface the switches are mounted to have any effect of the smoothness of the key stoke? Unless we are talking about different types of grittiness?

are you talking about like the feeling of sand in the switch? (exaggeration) ghetto reds were smooth for me, pcb.

yeah I am talking about that. but I really cant see how it being mounted on PCB rather than a metal place has anything to do with that.

wait a week or 2 of constant use if it still feels gritty yopu could lube. I had this problem with my Rosewill keyboards.

+1

I have a Poker MX Red and it was smooth as from day one. Add an o-ring mod and maybe a hundred hours of typing later and it is still fine with no grit for me. Sorry your experience hasn't been as pleasant.

Just got my CMStorm quickfire with reds.  There is some friction, but it is pretty smooth.  Hardly noticeable when you type fast, but like in another post, keycap material and speed of typing can lessen or exaggerate this.

I got the KBC poker red....yes they wear in over time and become butter smooth. I got a filco red as well and they are both as smooth as each other. I prefer the KBC poker though for size mainly.
