TAKUMI 10 Key USB Calculator - $40 (USA) $34 (Europe) shipped
« on: Wed, 02 November 2011, 04:23:46 »
While waiting for my Model M SSK aka Snooki to arrive, I've been searching for a keypad with independent Num Lock function.

I came across this USB calculator:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/110763124915?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649#ht_500wt_1156

Designed in Japan, it looks interesting. You don't have to worry about independent Num Lock function because the arrow and numeric keys are separate.

But I probably won't get it because I prefer a more conventional design with the large '0' and 'Enter' keys. And I also like beige or red better. This seller has it only in black and white. If you don't mind either color, the price is quite attractive, especially for folks in Europe. The seller needs to build his/her eBay profile but the item is covered by eBay's Buyer Protection program.

You can read Ripster's write-up on this device here.

I just did a quick search. You can get this item from here too, shipping to a US address is about $7. Not much, something like a 17% difference in price.

Wow, thanks. I'd wanted one of these, but was driven away by the absurd pricetag (like $100) $40 is much more reasonable.

Does this work as a numpad as well?

Yes, it works as a numpad if connected to your computer via USB. Disconnected (and with batteries), it works like a normal calculator.

I have a black one, it's nice but the number keys don't auto-repeat, so if you use it for arrow keys or gaming you might be disappointed.

Oh really? That's uncool. Is there any way to make them? Maybe I'll just have to teensy it.

I tried kbdrate and xset on linux but it didn't help. Then by using xev I found out that pushing a key down produces both a keypress AND a keyrelease event, even if you hold the key down :-(

Yeah, it's good, and mac/windows switchable. For Linux I'm using the mac mode, because the windows mode has the laptop trick which "pushes" NumLock instantaneously for every number keypress. Useful for laptops (whose numlock makes half their keyboard produce numbers) but not for desktops.
