help! IE8 problem with pages not loading completely?
« on: Sun, 18 December 2011, 17:02:50 »
Anybody know what would cause this behavior? Example: going to LAtimes website, the article loads but not the comments or this happens on the paypal help page when I try to get a web pin to contact them via phone. Looks like the background is the only partof the page that loads - status bar says "Done. But with errors on the page." (no ****, Sherlock..)
On paypal ("contact us ") the page looks like this:

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 35370
instead of like this:

[ Attachment Invalid Or Does Not Exist ] 35371
Webpage error details (though I don't have a clue what this means):

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) ; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 3.0.04506.648; .NET CLR 3.5.21022)

Running an AV scan again (but nothing has come up previously) and even reinstalled IE8. Is this my (or my machine's) fauilt or M$ft's? Can I fix it?

Why are you using IE8? Well at least it isn't IE6. Error message indicates Javascript error, check your security settings it may well be that your settings are too restrictive.

Hey VOIX!

Do I look like tech support?

Well, actually you DO kinda look the part...

Hey! I only don't come back to threads that I haven't actually figured out yet; when they do get resolved I will post accordingly.  The AV thing I'm still in the midst of and I DID report back that the cord switch out seemed to fix the Kensington up nicely (using it right now, in fact).  Considering that I'm sure I've posted a number of these technical help questions beyond those, I don't think that quite qualifies as "never."  (And if the others are still unsolved, then I guess this isn't the best to ask for technical help then after all... ;P)

Using IE8 cause the old VAIO can't handle IE9 and I usually just go with FF for the pure reason that it has the "Lazarus" add on...  but its necessary for some sites that don't like the Mozilla browser too well.  Probably gonna have to just get with the times soon and upgrade everything and start all over again.

But I'll try fiddling with the security settings and see if that helps anything... thanks!  It does seem like something is operating like a script blocker or something, but I don't think I have anything in IE8 that would do that.  Maybe an optimiser or tune-up program gone rogue with overzealous spyware defense...

 ^  LOL ... I couldn't even load that^ page!!

UPDATE

Got it fixed, apparently, at least for the time being, but it definitely got worse before getting better:

I actually turned ON a bunch of add-ons that were disabled (presumably because they were interfering with some functionality before) and that didn't quite work. Then I reset all the stuff you're supposed to reset and put everything back to default and then EVERYTHING went kaplooey - I tried monkeying around with the GPU hardware acceleration after checking with the M$ help pages which only made everything WORSE when I disabled write combining and hardware acceleration as it suggested. IE was even developing a horrible lag between keyboard typing input and characters registering on the screen on an order of magnitude - more than 5-10 seconds! That was more than frustrating. Then, adding insult to injury, IE8 took down Firefox with it as it too started exhibiting the "not responding" hanging behavior that has been generally M$ corner of the browser world and I ended up having to force quit and restart everything every few minutes just to hunt for the problem on the webz since the browsers kept crapping out on me. Ironically, it turned out to be fortunate now that EVERY single page, including the M$ pages, was throwing up an error of some kind in IE8 because it gave me lots of specific strings to google for a solution.

FINALLY I came across this page which seemed to be the closest to what I was experiencing

http://www.windowsbbs.com/internet-explorer/92507-internet-explorer-8-webpage-errors.html

which, for a wonder, indicated that at least one person had ended their troubles through this:

http://www.enhanceie.com/ua.aspx

THAT page gave me some specifics registry keys to look at, and I removed the offending entries, cleared out the prefetch folder (just in case), and ran a couple laps through system suites registry fixer to tidy up. THAT highlighted a couple of CLSID keys that were "Access Denied" when it tried to fix em, but only one was identifiable via a search: something related to Nero 7 scripting, apparently or WMP or both. S'okay now, tho. =)

It would seem that everything is working again. No more lag, no more error messages and paypal's page looks as it should again.

And you know what? Now that I think of it, I'm almost positive it was Microsofts own security tool which sabotaged me in the first place, or at least exacerbated an existing annoyance to unusuability ...

(and just as an aside - THANK GOD for the autosave feature here! I almost panicked after forgetting that I wasn't writing this from FF, having just checked the functionality of the PP page to be certain the fix took, and then accidentally closing the tab instead of the sidebar where I'd looked to find the links of the fix in my history... one click and all was well. This is going to be the only safe site to take that chance without Lazarus on IE8 ...PHEW!)

THANKS MUCH, DAEMONRACOON, for pointing me in the right direction !!
