Got my IBM M4 compact (sans trackpoint model)
« on: Thu, 22 December 2011, 18:40:20 »
Hey, this thing ain't that bad. The action is definitely unique...Very "poppy". I kinda like the dull pop they keys make. I also like the fact that it's a full-size keyboard--at least on the main area. Key profile is a bit low, but not chiclet low--you get some decent definition between key strike areas. I also like the layout, although the Ctrl keys are definitely on the tiny side (I'm pretty sure it was a cost-saving measure).

I'm typing on it right now, and plan to code with it tonight. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing, but it feels good typing on this little IBM. My dad (RIP) was an IBM'er for 27 years (Customer Engineer), so I guess there's some of that nostalgia in here. But I digress.

The thing is, so far I like it. I'm getting used to the pop pretty quickly. I'm being able to somewhat "float" my hands in mechanical keyboard style. Of course, there's a bit more pressure involved, but it's not uncomfortable at all. I'll let you guys know my feelings about it after a whole night of software development.

By the way, thanks for Dante for allowing me to get my hands on this keyboard for cheap. Transaction was pretty painless.

Thanks! The M4 fan website redirects to an IBM Pre-Sales Advisor website. Guy got his URL bought out?

I can understand your son. It really does feel nice. The layout is a big plus; IBM thought this one out nicely. I've been coding with it tonight and so far, no discomfort so far.

I should take this one for an extended test drive at the office tomorrow (where I curently have a Dell AT101W, which I'm liking quite a bit). That could be interesting.
