KBC Poker + Elite Keyboards RBG keycap fitment issues
« on: Tue, 10 January 2012, 18:14:30 »
Hello all! Writing from my poker which arrived today, which is working out lovely save one annoyance.

I ordered a set of rgb modifiers from elitekeyboards, and was surprised at how tight a fit they were.

The ctrl/alts and the right shift all went on fine and feel pretty much the same as the stock ones (besides the tight fit), but the left shift just feels....wrong. I tired removing and re-seating it several times (and to my horror managed to yank out the stabilizers every time - no worries though, they went back in fine), but no luck.

This only happens with the new green cap on:

The key seems harder to push and like it doesn't want to pop back up after I let go of it.

Aside from the smaller slots for the stems, I cant seem to find anything that makes it different from the original key, I have taken some photos, maybe someone else can notice something that I have missed. Sorry, I know they're not as scientific as ripster's but maybe it's something obvious? I can take some more later if there's something specific we should be measuring. I dont have a picture, but holding them bottom to bottom they seem to line up nearly perfectly 1mm or less difference in width or length. Again, sorry about the crappy pictures/color/cat hair.

interesting.
I had the exact same problem with the leopold's RBG keycap set.
the green shift was causing me problems . (not just on poker but on my old leopold as well).
but for reasons unbeknownst to me, I found that the key feels perfectly normal after a day lol.
try putting in the left green shift key before you go to bed and see if it feels normal the next morning.
I know this just sounds really weird / stupid but I had the same problem as you and this fixed it for me =S
let me know how this goes!

I had this same issue with my filco! Quick fix is to take a Dremel to the bottom edge that is catching on the case. Worked like a charm looks good (you can't see it on bottom of keycap)

Are they at slightly different angles then? Or the bottom edge is stickign slightly further forwards?

Well mine were the double shot ones from a group buy but it was the left shift that was getting stuck and would not pop back up. When I get back in town I will post some pics of my dremel work to the key.

This is kind of off topic but I'm happy you posted these pictures. I was disappointed that I couldn't find a KBC Poker with black switches in the sleek PBT key caps, and ended up purchasing one with ABS key caps instead. But after seeing these pictures of the ABS key caps of your Poker, they actually look very nice.

I did some more experimenting and found that the stabilizers are the problem. I took the stabilizer off completely (as in removed both side and the little metal bar) and attached the whole assembly to both keys.

I found that on the stock key, it could slide back and forth freely, while on the green key, the stabilizer seemed to bind slightly (though I have yet to determine where, I wish I had more nimble fingers and better eyesight).

I tried to take some video to capture this phenomenon, but was unsuccessful.

I don't have a micrometer, but I suspect that the "tightness" of the holes where the stems go (as a result of the walls being thicker than the stockers) also means their centers are slightly further apart. Not sure if this is true, or how to remedy it yet. It's not a big deal certainly, but I rather like the key and was hoping to get it on the board somehow.
