After spending a few hours with my first mechanical keyboard..
« on: Tue, 31 January 2012, 05:32:55 »
I love it.

My Ducky DK9008 Shining arrived today (brown switches,) and it is an absolute joy to type on.  I'm still noticably slower, and making more mistakes, than on my old keyboard - but this is only after 3-4 hours of use.  I'm getting better.

One thing i'm curious about, when looking into mechanical keyboards, I noticed a lot of stuff talking about how you don't need to bottom out the keys when you type, and how it's a good thing if you don't.  I'm wondering how many of you here still just bottom the keys out while you type, or did you pick up the habit of typing 'correctly' (i'm trying to create this habit now.. )

I bottom out a lot on my current keyboard, which is a Poker with reds, am doing it less than I used to, but I really don't see the issue, the sound of bottoming out is lovely  IMO :D

Gratz on your Ducky :)

I've become pretty good in not bottoming out after maybe two months of use (also have Browns).
Since you're just beginning to use it, you could try to not bottom out from now on. I think you then will type even slower but your speed will increase faster.
I'm just guessing tho, do whatever you enjoy most!

I don't think there's such a perfect non-bottoming out typist out there. :D

I don't bottom out my keys but not all. I think this is because I trained myself to press lightly. When you type a lot in games or work it helps if you don't type that hard and if you don't bottom out. I believe the fingers are as much like other body parts they have muscles that get tired and joints that suffer from shock. Or just simply, its a lot less tiring to type when you don't bottom out and just lightly tap the keys.

I bet lots of people bottom out tons of times (either accidentally or intentionally) especially on those lighter switches like brown and red.

It takes time to cut out most of the bottoming out. I notice that I bottom out the most on modifiers and space bar now that I have learned to touch type correctly.

After a bit of normal use, i've got to say that i'm glad I got the Ducky over the Filco.  largely because of how heavy my use of media keys is..  My only issue is that I wish the media keys were the primary functions of F keys, not a Fn + F-key :P

The backlights are actually really good - Way better than my G15's were (I have the Ducky with green backlights).  They go just as dark as the G15 did, but go far brighter, and the option to only light up certain parts of the keyboard is great.

And the keycap puller that came with it.. i've never he one before, and it's aweeeesome.  (Believe it or not, but I use to just jam a knife under keys and pop them out)

I've had a mechanical keyboard for a bit less than a year and still bottom out heavily on Blues and Browns. I got a keyboard with Blacks when I was working in a cube farm very close to other people, and because that model took so much force to actually get all the way down to the metal plate, I did bottom out less on it.

That said, no matter how hard I try, I virtually cannot avoid bottoming out the noisy space bars on all my keyboards, which tends to make my poor thumbs take a lot more abuse than the rest of my fingers combined :(. I would almost do an o-ring mod to that key alone and probably knock out half the noise I make on my keyboards, but 2/3 of them are Filcos with Costar stabilizers, and I don't want to break anything in taking it apart :(

You could possibly make some sort of f lock using autohotkey, where it would switch which between how it is and what you describe. Depends if fn actually gets sent as a keypress. If you used a different modifier you could do it regardless.

Okay, so I finally found the cable for my phone, so here are some pictures.

Keyboard came inside this cool bag.  I really liked it, actually made me feel like I was buying something quality.

Blacklights turned on in a dark room.  They were far brighter than my old keyboard at max brightness.  Also, that's my mouse on the right side.

My old Logitech G15 Refresh, and my new Ducky.  :)

Why go 4mm when you can go 2.5mm and get the key registered?

Of course it's faster when not bottoming out, your fingers get less reaction force from your keyboards and therefore they are less tired when typing for a long time.

Congrats on the new Ducky! I also made the switch from rubber domes to mechanical switches quite recently, and I find myself bottoming out most of the time. There have been a few threads discussing this, and there are people on both sides; so, as the saying goes, "to each his own."

Looks nice!  I can type without bottoming out on MX clears.  I have browns on a numpad and I have to put more of a conscious effort into not bottoming out on them.
