Scissor Switch to Mechanical
« on: Mon, 12 March 2012, 20:43:39 »
Sorry for disappearing earlier, I went on vacation. As a consequence, some of you might recognize me.

I've been using a Logitech Illuminated (which, iirc, uses scissor switches) that has recently died. I would like to purchase a mechanical keyboard, and, from what I've been seeing, Cherry MX Reds seem to be the closest thing to the extremely low pressure and travel distance for actuation (at least for a non-mechanical keyboard) on the Logitech Illuminated.

I'm just looking for some suggestions on some decent keyboards, I've been looking at the Leopold fullsize and the CM Storm Quickfire. I've also looked through ripster's thread, but most of those are $150+ which is out of my budget range (~$120).

Numpad is not required, and neither is backlighting.

I would prefer PS/2 & USB capabilities.

Thanks in advance!

CM Storm QuickFire Rapid is a great board for the price and fits your needs.  Definitely worth a try.

Is there a good place to purchase the Quickfire Red? The Coolermaster store doesn't work for me, and only the blue version is up on amazon/newegg.

Try using the forum's classified and post a buying thread.  That's how I got my Filco mx brown since amazon stock got depleted.  I got a pretty good deal on a barely used one too.

If you don't mind TKL then a ducky or a leopold would be my suggestion. I believe they are superior in build quality to the QFRapid, don't quote me on that though, just what I remember from reviews.

no, the ducky TKL boards are crap
lots of quality control issues.
they are only good for their 9008g2 and 9008s boards.

leopolds are another good choice, but it uses the cherry stabilizers which alot of ppl seem to hate( i dont really mind them that much)
its also slightly more expersive than the Quickfire Red. imo leopold and quickfires have about the same build quality.

edit: just saw that this guy is selling a quickfire red at a really low price.
dunno if its been sold yet though

If it doesn't work out, there's currently a sale on at Newegg for Rosewill RK-9000RE boards.  High quality for a price similar to the CMStorm.
