KMAC with Red Alert set from sixty
« on: Thu, 29 March 2012, 13:29:52 »
A wise man told me that once I start typing on a KMAC, I would throw away all my other keyboards...   and you know what, if it wasn't for some sentimental reason, I would've done just that (already traded my Filco Limited Edition reds with a Type-S).  So I got the "winkeyless" version meaning no Windows keys at all and also there were 2 color choices, silver or titanium.  I opted for the later.  It doesn't come fully assembled and since I have neither the time nor the equipment (soldering iron being one of them), I had someone else do them for me...  and yes, the switches have been sticker modded and also lubricated.

You can see some pics of the assembly here (pics might take awhile to load) and also it's the silver one.

After 8 months, the Red Alert set finally came in for sixty so I thought I combine both of them here together.  The RA set is beautiful and has many combinations (for ANSI, ISO, full, tenkeyless, etc).  The packaging was efficient and it arrived reasonably quick (all the way from Berlin).  The set also includes any defective keycaps and their replacement, etc.

With LEDs on, you can see the underglow effect on RA set.

This thing is heavy even though it's has aluminum case.
Tipping off the scale at 3.74 Lbs.

Cherry MX black w/ 55g springs

Switches w/ LEDs

More pics with LEDs lit up..  now I'm not a big fan of keyboards with LEDs but these are beautiful.  They're very subdued and not overly bright as you can see below

Full shot with Ascaii's doubleshot set & Caps Lock key from Reptile

Feet are consisting of 2 parts, the thick washers and the nuts

Rubber strip to prevent it from sliding and Allen bolts

USB cutout and the port

Now, there were some delay due to the fact that the KMAC organizers weren't too happy when the first few batches arrived.  The colors on the 2 pieces didn't match (top and bottom frames) so they had to send the whole original batch back and wait for the new batch.  Last I've seen they're selling off these off-color 2 tones at a discount price over at Korean keyboards enthusiast forums (where whiskerBox frequents a lot these days lol).

Now I was told that the 2 tone color on the frames couldn't be fixed and that they're not going to make them in titanium anymore on the next group buy.  TBH, on mine, I can't really tell the difference too much unless I'm looking at it from an angle with some bright/natural light shining on the case.  Anyone else got the same color please post some pics of your frames.

Earlier pic of the frames (the ones they sent back)

That's it for now and if you have any question please let me know.

So jealous Reaper!

They just started selling the ones with mismatched color frames here.  Find a proxy in Korea to see whether you can get one or not.  If not, I've read that us and DT "might be" included in the next group buy...  keep your fingers crossed.

Whisker, you should know this since you posted there a couple times now. =P

Blacks with 50g springs aren't blacks.

it's a custom spring if im not mistaken.

clears are 55, blacks 60 and reds 45. so, not as light as a red, but not as heavy as a black.

topre is MX form?

It is likely that they are custom springs. Also, I think clear springs are much heavier(require much more force to depress) than 50g.

I wonder if I should try to get one this time.. The pricing of the so-called defective package is 220000 KRW (about 200 USD) However, even if you get a hold of the package(I think it would be tough to get one), you would still need to get parts such as switches, stabilizers, and key caps not to mention you would have to assemble it yourself or have some one do it for you at about $50 (or more if you want more things done on your board).

From the picture, I see the switches are sticker modded, possibly lubricated. I lubricated my Poker with Krytox and it feels very different and smooth. It also sounds different (very little rattling noise).

A 62g compression spring is a 62g compression spring.  Hooke's law.

Even if it is gold.

I don't know what you mean..

OP states it is 50g spring and I said I think it is custom spring and 50g spring is different from springs from clears.

And why are you suddenly talking about 62g spring and Hooke's law? If you are talking about the reason for custom springs, I believe it is because they want different force. They are not making clones of Cherry original springs with same specification from just different materials.

oh no, the old ripster is trying to come out!!!!

nobody is arguing that a gold spring is better than w/e material is currently used. mkawa was just asking if 50g spring was also a clear spring, which we already answered him.

there's no way a clear is a 100g spring. where did you get that data from? my spares are a couple states away, but i'm guessing they're around 70g

anyway i had no idea the koreans were getting custom springs made in any material, much less gold. it seems like cherry ships a compatible spring at every reasonable point between 40g and 70g or so, so it seems unnecessary, but despite the physics 101 description of spring behavior, there are probably many subtleties to coil spring design, even at this scale, soooo

When you use photos that do not belong to you, you should cite sources.

That spring is from recent group buy by KBDMania syryan. It is gold plated for cool factor only and it stands out from other springs(helps distinguishing). That is what syryan said.

However, when he plated gold on to those spring, he did it in a way that doesn't affect uniformness as some plating process can cause randomness in the forces, hence there had to be price increase.

If you don't know what it is and how it is, please don't fool yourself by saying something irrelevant.

I got the tracking numbers from sixty and it came in through NY.  Custom there released it way faster than their west coast counterpart (my KMAC came in at LAX and the custom took their sweet time before they release it lol).

Might wanna pm sixty again to see if he has any tracking numbers for your set.

I've never understood the fuss over the red alerts... but that number row really ties the set together.
