What is under the keycap of my 87U?
« on: Thu, 07 June 2012, 08:57:44 »
The left Ctrl key

Untitled by Jэяяу, on Flickr

What lead to my discovery was when I was using the Ctrl key and noticed that the sound of the key was much more dampened.
Does anyone know what this is? Should I contact EK about it? I received the keyboard just yesterday.

they actually lube the switches? I've taken my HHKB apart before and didn't notice there was lube.

Yup, those are normal.  I've seen them on pretty much all the RF from EK and even the ones I got directly from Leopold in S. Korea.

I should have ordered a tube with my 87U. How often do these babies need to be lubed?

I suppose that would depend on the usage but I haven't lubed mine yet and I have it for awhile.  Guess the one that came with it was sufficient. lol

Anywho, welcome to Geekhack! =D

i wonder if this explains demik's assertion that hhkb 45g is somehow wildly different from rf 45g

I personally find the 87U feeling much more solid in every keystroke. The sound it produces kind of explains the way the keyboard is built. (If that makes any sense) Also, the spacebar on my 87U 45g feels like it's heavier than every other key on the keyboard. I don't know if that's true or if that's just me :P

It sounds deliberate.  I don't know about Topre, but cherry make switches (the grey ones) that I've only ever seen under space bars..

I remember swapping out the grey switch from my MX11800 spacebar to the scroll lock key. I like it lighter on the spacebar

I wonder if the supposed "stiffening" of the switches over time, is actually due to the lube drying out and not actually from the rubber getting firmer.

Edit: going back to the OP, I had quite a bit of lube under my left modifier as well
