What's The Geekiest Thing You Own?
« on: Sun, 17 June 2012, 23:26:09 »
After a recent post, I starting thinking about what other things some of us might collect that could raise a few eyebrows. Granted it all depends on the person judging your "collectables". But what items do you personally own that even cause you raise a brow from time to time?

For me the geekiest thing I can think of is my 5 1/4 red floppy disk signed by Steve Woz.

I think most people agree Woz is pretty cool, but I find it odd sometimes that I'm holding onto a floppy disk he personally signed.

The geekiest thing I owned for a long period of time was an old 1993 HP 9000 mainframe.  Weighed ~400lbs, about 6ft tall, metal wheels, made lots of noise, no clue how to get it working.  I could turn it on and listen to the awful grinding noise the core unit made.  I wanted an IBM mainframe but was unable to find one for the price I wanted (still looking).  Sadly I had to make room, so I took it apart and kept the PCBs in the core unit for decoration.  I'd post images, but my camera isn't working.

I've got an akai GX635 Tapedeck. It was my grandfather's and is not completely working. But it just looks too cool. Even though it is a 20Kg behemoth.

Does it have to be computer geek?
On my wall is a calendar of women in costumes (sci/fi, fantasy, comic book characters), from a forum. Actual board members = real geek girls. That is the geekiest thing that I have that I can think of at a moment's notice.

BTW, I would love to have anything that was signed by Woz.

Nope doesn't have to be computer related, that's pretty cool that some of the forum members decided to make a calendar though.

Edit: Unless you made the calendar yourself ;)

That's a cool thing! Can you post a picture of it?

I think the geekiest thing I have is a replica of the Jason hockey mask.... but also got a lot of other strange things. I think a lot of them are not recognized by me as geeky.... only by others.... lol

My stereo equipment resides in the carcass of an IBM 3174-1L terminal controller.

I have a model representing a hypothetical locomotive (an Electro-motive SD90 built with the standard cab)

I went out of the way to buy specific Korean comics, despite only being able to read about three words of the language.

Either my HypnoCube or my Parallax Basic Stamp stuff, although they are not really collectibles they are probably the geekiest things I own other than my keyboards!

I own 2 pairs of custom in ear monitors.  The Unique Melody Merlins and Miracle.  A lot of people ask me why I would spend close to $1000 on a pair of iem's but it's the same reason why someone would spend close to $300 on a keyboard  :)

Geekiest thing I own? Well, there's a lot of stuff that I would consider geeky, but the one I think that would the geekiest is the arcade stick I use to practice at home(simply because I don't want to carry it around and possibly damage it).

Here is my Hori Real Arcade Pro 2: Special Addition:

Either that, or it would be my Super Famicom Wii Classic Controller from Club Nintendo Japan:

Does this qualify me as a geek? Now I just need to order a keyboard and I think I will fit in just fine.

Geekiest? Hmm. My vintage computer equipment!
Two XT's. One from 1987 and the other from 1989.  With working RLL/MFM hard drives FTW. I use them to test XT keyboards and to fiddle with DOS. And I own 6 5.25 floppy drives. 3 360k and 3 1.2Mb drives.
My custom built 486 and my Macintosh SEFDHD.
Most people think, what's the purpose of having these machines, to which I respond "I view them as  historical pieces, a reminder of how we have advanced".

Now those are some pretty sweet input devices!

I never got around to making a sweet controller for my Mame Cabinet, but I did mod a Sega Genesis to use the controllers for playing Mame.

Just read the article. LOL. How can you not know DOS? Just the other day I went to my local computer shop and talked to a guy about if they still use DOS  for certain applications. And they still do. Apparently they use DOS to overclock many of their prebuilt computers. I also went there to use their MX keyboards for free. mmm. Steelseries 7G :D

I have a small collection of Rubik's cubes. I have a 2x2x2, a 3x3x3, a 4x4x4, a 3x3x3 mirror cube, and a Pyramid cube. I can solve all but the 4x4x4 (I'm too lazy to memorize how to solve it). I also have my server, which I use as a web server, a mail server, an FTP server, and as a host for my RuneScape Private server. So overall, I would consider myself to be moderately geeky.

That's why I collect Gameboy systems. I find them very aesthetically pleasing.

Hello, fellow cuber. I keep my competition cubes in a briefcase with a foam mold I made myself, so that's probably the geekiest thing I own. A geeky result of this would be this trophy I got last year for multi-BLD:

Here's my WCA page for my official results: http://www.worldcubeassociation.org/results/p.php?i=2010MARK03

I also own an arcade stick (not as awesome as your guys', though) and 3 unicycles (20" Koxx-One, 24" Torker, 29" Nimbus). That's most of my geeky stuff, I suppose; nothing as killer as that Gameboy collection - that's awesome, sealcouch.

Nice trophy! I was never much of a speed-solver myself, I just enjoyed the puzzle aspect of solving cubes. Rubik's cubes became quite the fad at my highschool last year. A friend of mine had quite the large collection; he had everything from a 2x2x2 up to an 11x11x11, and he could solve every single one of them.

Here's something else, although I think this might fall under the "nerdy" category, rather than geeky

My collection of K-On petit nendoroids. and not trying to sound like a hipster or anything, but I bought these before I knew how popular K-On actually was. xD

The color wasn't my choice really. I told the guy he could go nuts! I like it though. It's blue to purple chameleon  flakes on a black base.
It's hard to tell, but in the second video, I keep turning back and forth to show it changing from purple to blue. It's pretty awesome! :D

Is that what people call doubles in Pump It Up? I have only ever played DDR machines as that is what was around when I used to go to arcades. I can play doubles on heavy in DDR but I usually stay away from ITG charts with difficulties over 10-12 even on one pad. DDR made me weak haha.

Nah, I guess it's just called Doubles in PIU now. There used to be Freestyle and Nightmare, now it's just Double Performance and Double.

Too bad there are NO good machines around the Denver area. I miss the Fiesta I was playing on before. :( I guess a place nearby did just get an ITG2 dedicab in, though. Cheap play on Fridays, too, so I may have to go play tomorrow.

I can't think of anything to top any of you... Ok, wait... I have a coin collection from all the places I have been, maybe that is 'geeky'? But I view them more as free souvenirs really. Its too much effort to get some random coins or small notes exchanged so I just keep them usually. Too lazy to count, but have currency from probably over 20 countries from various periods from 1989 to now, including former Soviet bloc and other defunct countries/currencies.

If I had to choose my geekiest it would be my unopened copy of DOS 5.0. No reason to own it, other than it's history haha.

But seriously... you'd be surprised how oblivious much of the younger generation is when it comes to old technology.  I have even heard of a young IT rep asking what DOS was because she seriously didn't know.

I'm 17 and I'm proud to be separate from my generation. My school was throwing out a bunch of Model M's, some old IBM lab equipment, and an unopened copy of DOS 5.0, and I just had to have the DOS and a Model M. Unfortunately, I opened it, and played around on an old PC, installed DOS and was playing DOOM with the Model M. Twas like time travel.

Computer related it would have to be a Sony 256 MB flash drive I bought the day it came out. I worked at Circuit City at the time and the Sony was one of the first to come out with a 256 drive. the price in 2002 $179 and I bought 2 at employee discount (130 each I think it was). Today you can get a 128 GB flash drive for less than what I payed back then.

Non-computer related a collection of WWII mess kit utensils which I use on a daily basis.

/sigh/ I'm 16. I know what DOS is. I can't quite wrap my head arround not knowing what it is. That's truly odd.
On the other side of things, not exactly geeky. But fun nonetheless, my Dad has a 1974 Volkswagen Thing, and I have a 1983 Suzuki FA50. Truly an amazing ride, the moped that is. I haven't gotten to driving stick quite yet. :(

Indeed they are! My parents get nervous when I ride it though (new driver and all), so they are making me drive a car when school kicks back into gear. Partly because they want me to take my sister, but also partly because my peers are morons in cars.

An IBM PS/2 that I've been hoarding since it was in use (that's how I got my M, and appreciation for keyboards)
A server rack in the basement complete with Xeon servers, industrial-grade switch and UPS
My uncle's slide rule
My grandfather's physics textbook
Signed copy of "Free software, Free society"
Collection of DOS games and id Software FPSes
A self-hacked, overclocked SEGA Genesis with S-video out
A GameGripper for my old Droid
XBox 360 racing wheel
Every Futurama episode on DVD

And, lest I forget, a NetBSD bumper sticker.  Ultimate nerd shame.

I dont' have a pic of it handy at the moment, but I built myself one of those "useless machine" boxes a few years ago.  The box with a pole switch on top, that when you flip it, the lid opens and an arm comes out and turns the switch back off, then retracts and disappears back into the box.

I have several pocket protectors, most of which have been well used (by me, personally).

Years ago I worked in an architectural firm and I needed to have at least half a dozen pens and pencils of varying colors, widths, etc, in my pocket at all times.

In that situation, a plastic pocket protector is the best and only realistic way to keep the tools of your trade handy and organized.

Today, I still keep my vital drawing instruments in these containers, inside my black bag.

Piss off, twerps!
Grandiose views of self, devaluation of others, lack of empathy, gaslighting (distorting facts and insisting on blind obedience to one’s own view of reality) – all in service to the ego of the narcissist – pose clear and present dangers to relationships. A narcissist without conscience, restraints, checks or balances can easily become an authoritarian or sociopath, insisting that they are not beholden to laws or responsible to their relationships, organization, community or even country as a whole. All that matters is unbridled power and winning antagonistically against others.

well they are all diffrent, I could have tried to list all the variant names etc but I'm really lazy lol... but for example, I have a jap version, an xbox version, a CE version, a PC version, a steal tin version etc etc etc...

The only game I have more than one version of that are identical is Zone of the Enders, I have 3 copies of that becasue amazon ****ed up and one guy sent me two copies my mistake and neither had the MGS2 demo inside so I ordered another one that did (which ended up not having it but I got my money back and didnt have to return it so meh lol)

My collection seemed much larger at the time, guess it isnt too bad. I never got really good at any of them, my average on the normal 3x3 rubiks cube was ~25 seconds. Got made fun of to no end in middle/high school. Guess it was too geeky a hobby for people to go without comment or ridicule. Hah! Still play with a few occasionally, though my interest in collecting/modding them has long since died out.

Or it could be this. I remember watching an episode of Robot Wars where one of the people had made chain maile out of soda tabs. I took some pliers to a few on my own and found out how to get them to link together. Never finished it though, collecting those tabs took time and I cut my hands a lot. xD This was in elementary school too. haha

I have a slide rule that my parents bought me for Christmas 3 years ago. I'm actually quite quick at using it - I've used it on physics exams before.

Other than that, I have a 40 count programming book collection, made of mostly "Introduction to C" and "Learn C++ in 24 days!" books.

I think to everyone but frequenters of this forum, my 5 keyboard collection (With some coming in the near future!), and the 1000 keycaps I ordered from SP is by far the nerdiest :P

How does one build an ISP?

The same way any other utility or ISP is built. I actually built an ISP myself. I would get completely unmanaged bandwidth and an IP block from a POP provider such as NTT and Cogent and then resell the service. All of the access, user accounts, and bandwidth was managed by my NOC. Most utilities in unregulated areas are set up this way. That's most likely how you get your Internet service. Small, privately owned ISPs were very common until about 10 years ago when broadband became much cheaper and small ISPs, like mine, could not compete with lower prices of the big boys (Comcast, etc.) And many of the "big boys" operate the same way, but on a larger scale. Small ISPs are still around in rural areas of the U.S.
SSKs for everyone!

It's a ducky mouse (goes w/ your Ducky keyboard). Right eye = left click, left eye = right click, nose = middle click. If you pick it up, the eyes move around.

I don't own one, but I felt one and it feels more cloud of boobs than Cherry Reds.

It has a very unique feeling, On a different level than regular mouses.
