Looking for a good upgrade to current keyboard
« on: Fri, 03 August 2012, 17:47:43 »
Hello! I'm dithering about what keyboard to get and i gather that this is the place to ask about this sort of thing.

I'm currently using a cherry g84-4100prmgb and like it a lot, but, I t feels like the key's are little too close together. I've only really noticed this since i slammed my fingers in a door and tore some nerves so I'm not sure if this is imagined. Do different keyboards have different key spacings?

What are the nearest equivalent switches to the ML ( i think) switches in the MX range? To be honest I could use something a little more tactile than what's in the 4100. I'll be using it for a mix of FPS gaming and typing.

So I'm thinking of getting a Tenkeyless board possibly with browns. I used to use a model M back in the day and I do really miss the feel of that board though.

I've seen this: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=13810003122 which certainly looks good with the back lighting. But I'm not sure of the best way to order it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a cherry ML, and used it for a short while. The key spacing is the same as any other keyboard, but a lot of the modifier keys are smaller.

Anyway, if you want a cherry MX that's like it... (I just had to get mine out and try it) I was going to say blues, but now that I've looked at it again, browns might be a better option. They aren't any more tactile, but the tactile point feels a little less mushy, and they are a lot smoother as a whole. If you liked your model M, perhaps blues are good for you, as both switches are tactile and clicky (you feel them, and they make a noise)

Perhaps a better option is to buy a new model M keyboard. They're still made, by Unicomp.

Not in tenkeyless, though.

The Taobao one sort-of looks like the keycool 87, which looked pretty good, especially for the price. I don't really "do" backlit, so I can't comment further.

If you're a really hardcore FPS gamer, you shouldn't go with blues, as you can't "double tap" the switch as fast (by riding the activation point, like you can using reds). If you like typing at all, blues are really excellent for it.

Thanks dorkvader, it's a shame that they don't have a tenkeyless. I really don't have the room for a full size keyboard.

From what you've said the browns seem like a good compromise between the two.

That filco looks good too! Bit of a price difference there though. On a side note would a Poker be any good for gaming? I see a they get a lot of mention on this forum.

Frankly, if buckling springs is something you liked enough, nothing else is the same.
