Keyboard for FPS and Writing (Can't Decide) Danish Keys
« on: Mon, 06 August 2012, 14:03:54 »
Hello Geekhackers :)
I'm playing alot of FPS games. Mostly COD4 (Promod only though).
I would like to have a really nice keyboard that i can use for atleast a few years. Other than playing games i type alot (skype, web and so on) and i type fast.
Currently i'm trying to make it in the CGI buisness working with programs such as 3ds Max and Photoshop and so on.

There is quiet alot of different keyboards out there and i know allmost nothing about it. I have been using Logitech G15 for a few years now.

I was thinking of the Filco Majestouch-2 because it's possible to buy with the danish keys.

I'm thinking about buying with brown switch (would like you're opinion)?
Also, is there anything out there as good with the option for danish keys?

I think a nice solid board like a rosewill or filco with MX red switches would be the best. I would get a rosewill RK-9000. They're super nice, and have a really good price.

EDIT: didnt see the danish layout part. scratch the RK. get a filco! : P

Hehe okay, iv'e read a review that the Filco get's it's keycaps worn off after a couple of months for the most parts. (http://deskthority.net/news-reviews-f4/filco-majestouch-2-tenkeyless-t1088.html)
I could always buy the ninja if this is true.
You would recommend the red over the brown though?

+1 for a filco with reds

Also, get the ninja version unless you're going to swap out the keys as they are pad printed and will wear out.

Yes! Reds are my favorite for gaming. and they are even with blues when it comes to typing for me. a lot of people like browns, but I think they're boring and have a gritty feeling. and the issue with the filco keycaps is that they get shiny. you could fix that with a decent set of keycaps. for me though, they never get shiny.

My favorite for both gaming, but especially for typing, is browns. Try all and decide for your self :)

Can't decide between red or brown now  :(
Btw, i found a website that sells danish layout keyboards called Zowie Celeritas(comes in red/brown), dunno if that is a known board in here.

They seem like a pretty small company so i'm not sure i could trust them.

Everyone likes different switches. The best thing for you is find someone that has to board they will let you try. Or you can sign up for the switch tester tour.

IMO, I like all switches except blacks. Can type, game on any switch.

+1 on filco reds.

My personal preference is browns (yet to try clears), due to the fact that they still have some tactility, contrary to the reds. Oftentimes I've misspressed a key with reds without noticing I had even put any weight on it. But that's more of a "get used to the switch" scenario, not a problem one would consistently run into if used as a main board.

I would also recommend you to get a nice set of keycaps for it, some good pbt surely feels better than the stock abs (I haven't got any doubleshot sets yet, but most people weight those equally high, especially due to the better contrast, compared to dyesub pbt).

They're good boards. Pretty much all mechanical keyboards are gonna be pretty close in quality. The internals are almost all exacly alike. Most of the time with the same formula. Big metal switches attached, and a PCB under that. the only really difference youre ognna notice is the quality of the case. The zowie should be fine.

And for me personally, I had had a board with brown switches for a few weeks. I tried to give it a chance, but I just couldn't love it. Then I tried reds and was instantly in love xD

I do agree with vio though. You should decide for yourself. I do understand that you wanna buy one and stick with it though. If I had a board with brown switches, I'd send it to you so you could try it, along with a board with red switches :D

EDIT: i was tpying this when Zifle made his post above, and I totally agree with him that you should get a set of PBT keycaps. Probably the most important part of a keyboard. they feel sooooo sexy xD

Boosts reply reminded me. If you're somewhere near Viborg, I have a board with each of browns, blues and reds, which you could try out.
Just send me a PM if that's the case, and we can figure something out :3

Black keyboards are a pain. The primary way to achieve reliable legends on black keys is double-shot injection moulding. No-one makes keyboards with those any more (though you can buy aftermarket keys via group buys). Pad-printed legends wear off, and laser infill stains rapidly, cracks up and falls out of the grooves. Dye sub is cheaper and extremely long-lasting, but not available on black as the ink is not opaque. I think you can actually paint the keys (seems to be what Topre do) but I have no idea how long that lasts.

Black keys show up a worn surface much faster than beige and white, making them far more demanding on the plastics.

I don't know if you had the Acorn BBC Micro in Denmark, but those had white-on-black double shots that don't go shiny at all – they're ageless. Nearly 30 years old and good-as-new keys. Nothing of that quality exists today.

BTW the Celeritas is well known. So far as I know it's good? No idea on what they have for legends – the keys need to be cleaned with alcohol though! (I thought it was a backlit keyboard … seems not)

wasdkeyboards Is a really nice site.
I might actually buy from there. Maybe even create a custom design myself. Surprisingly "not that expensive".
Either that or the Celeritas, i think the Filco would become too expensive for me, especially if i need to change the keys.

Btw, im really surprised about the amount of feedback! :)

I don't live that close to Viborg so i don't think that would be an option. Although very kind of you to offer that.

WASDkeyboards are really nice. that would be a nice alternative to filco for sure.

(just make sure you get red switches, and not browns *wink wink*)

EDIT* It's really fun to type WASDkeyboards

it honestly depends on what you like!
imo i don't care what switch i use between blue, brown or red.
blues are the most fun since you get that sexy lady who moans when you touch the cloud of boobs
brown is a cloud of boobs with silicone implants
red is a cloud of boobs

for FPS, definitely go with reds. I used blues on a razer widow and even though the typing was great, I couldn't dodge correctly. Granted, the game is kinda fast and intensive(Quake Live). Maybe in CoD you'll have success with other switches. It's  almost consensus that reds are the way to go. I'm currently using a Rosewil rk-9000 and playing FPS with them is great. typing also feels really good.

No problem, distance always makes it a little more difficult for these types of hobbies.

A friend of mine bought a WASD with reds, barebone, and coupled it with some PBT caps from Qtan, which he is very happy with thus far.
Do remember that we have to pay customs when receiving stuff from outside of Europe, so stuff does get more expensive.

If you still are undecided between the browns and reds, you could try to go to a retailer, it's likely they have a Steelseries G6/7, with black switches. They might also just have a black widow if you're lucky. I went to Elgiganten not too long ago, and they had the Steelseries, but no sight of the widow. Regardless, if you do try out the blacks, just imagine them with less force.

A drawback to this one is that the spacebar is cherry black, even if all the other keys are brown/red.

i would recommend it to get blues/brown.

Some gamers may dont like the blues cuz of the high pitch sounds. But for me (gaming CoD4) the most, I  find it quite nice cuz its feels solid.

I would buy Filco Majestouch Camo BROWN TKL in the end of 2012. Just to test it out ;)....

.And I also type at around 140 wpm with the blues.... just to let you know, (we got the same category here= Gaming and typing).
