Internet Browsers
« on: Wed, 08 August 2012, 12:00:17 »
You can't have a right and proper computer-related forum without a thread for folks to argue about what software they use to view Web pages on the Internet. So here it is!

So I guess I'll kick it off with the programs I use to go on the Internet. On my main machine, a Dell Optiplex GX270, and my Micron, I use Internet Explorer 6. On my Windows 3.1 machine, my iMac, and my Power Macintosh G3, I use MSIE5.

So what browers do you use?

Opera's not a bad browser. When something doesn't work for me in Internet Explorer 6, Opera's always my second choice. Runs nice and fast and takes up very little system resources compared to Firefox and Google Chrome.

But Firefox...can't stand it. It's almost as irritating as Flash Player where they're releasing whole new versions every month or two. That needs to stop before I start using it again.

And Chrome? They hide all the stinkin' buttons! That's a big turnoff for me right there.

I mainly use Firefox...it's gotten a lot better and now I actually find it faster than Opera overall and more standards-compliant. I still use Opera a bit but Chrome is becoming my favorite second browser (also because it's fast and standards-compliant). I sometimes use IE 9 which is "ok".

Maxthon 2 for many years. Then they came out with Maxthon 3 and a new engine. Very disappointing. Roboform does not work properly with MX3 and that is a deal breaker. Also no session manager, no tab utilities type addons etc. I want to like it but the Maxthon crew makes it difficult. And their proprietary bookmarks system is the pits. Not able to use xmarks with the browser either.

1. Firefox
2. Chrome
3. Maxthon in a pinch

Chrome on the Mac at home, Firefox on Windows at work (used to use Chrome on Windows too, but it has gone freaky recently - won't load pages properly).
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Firefox on Windows, Chrome on Linux, Dolphin on Android, Mercury on iOS.

I would like to use Chrome on every platform, and I feel like it will completely take over the browser market in the next few years. But I get extremely annoyed by it's quirks and it's relatively poor extensions (Firefox's ieTab implementation is much better, and chrome doesn't have a FlashGot equivalent. Not to mention that Xmarks routinely ****s up bookmark sync on Chrome). I run Linux on my old, slow computers; Firefox is noticeably slower, so I use Chrome there. But on my fast Windows 7 machine, where I do most of my web browsing, Firefox reigns supreme.

Dolphin on Android just kills. Nothing else even approaches it.

Mercury has nicer gesture support and more options than other browsers on iOS. In-built adblock is a very nice perk.

Firefox on my computers. And Sleipnir on Android, because it does gestures and especially tabs right. I also like how its interface just gets out of the way.

I use Chrome now, but for the last few years I used Firefox exclusively. There's things I still do prefer about Firefox (the Nagios extension for Chrome sucks, for example) but Chrome is overall faster and a more light weight experience thus far, so no real complaints. Firefox is a memory hog and while they've greatly improved the performance over the years, Chrome still zips past it with ease.

Wow. So many firefox users (noobs).  ;)

Everybody who prefers FF should upgrade to Palemoon. Its firefox modded to remove all the code for older processors (Pentium 1,2,3 , Old Athlons, etc). AKA NO JUNK CODE. Makes it noticably faster, has exact same functionality and layout of firefox. Srsly, i discovered this thing a year ago after years of firefox, and it is in every way an upgrade.

Firefox 14.0.1, but that is mostly because I am too lazy to switch to anything else. Browsing in multiple medium-sized windows, just as I have done since Netscape 4 in 1999. For years I was an Opera user, which I had configured like Netscape 4.
Never use tabs -- I use "window shade" in the window manager instead. Since getting a widescreen monitor, I often browse with two windows side by side.

Opera 11.11, the latest version of opera doesn't seem to like flash players, and 11.11 has the really nice feature which shows an icon and website information forn bookmarked pages on the address bar. Otherwise I resort to firefox when websites don't like opera.

Chrome all the way.  I do, however, work somewhere that IE is mandatory, and use IE9 here an there when I truely have no choice.  Whenever possible though, I use Chrome+IETabs... but it's not perfect by any means.  I've recently found some really strange permissions issues in Sharepoint.
