First mechanical keyboard

Hi guys !


I'm thinking of a new keyboard. Unfortunately, in my country are only available at these :

Razer BlackWidow Ultimate (mx blue)
CoolerMaster Quick Fire Pro (mx red)
CoolerMaster Quick Fire Rapid (mx black or red in two months :/)


Is it true that Filco and CM are from the same factory ? How does CM compared with Filco ? Razer is reportedly poor quality...

If I order a Quick Fire Rapid Red - I have one question about keyboards without number pad - is it disturbing ? when using the cursor arrow keys ? All the time in my life, I used a normal keyboard

My needs: 80% time is for games (FPS) and 20% for typing (forums and two or three documents per month)


MX Red is the best for me ? Any advice? Opinions ?

1. Quick fire pro OEM = iOne, Blackwidow OEM = iOne. Blackwidow has had quallity assurance issues, not sure on the pro though as despite having the same OEM boards can differ. iOne is not that bad.

2. Quick fire rapid = Costar board which is the same factory that makes filco keyboards.

3. IMO reds are nicer for FPS than blacks as the spring is lighter.

I've never used the arrows on the number pad your mileage with vary some people adopt the number pad and some don't. If you need to do data entry and are used to it then you will probably need it, if not it's better for positioning.

TLDR: Order the quick fire rapid mx red, it looks cool and is effectively a $150 keyboard with a reasonable feature set.

I have both CM quickfire rapid and filco. They feel exactly the same, so if you don't care about logos and branding, just go with CM for cheaper costs.

I'd go with either one of the CM boards.  If you're afraid of tenkeyless keyboards (no number pad), then get the QuickFire Pro.  I've had both the Rapid and Pro - both are excellent quality keyboards, the Pro has textured keycaps which I like a lot, but no PS/2 adapter.  I've read that you can't enter the BIOS with it in USB mode.  I can't confirm this since I don't own it anymore, so that's a risk.

Don't get a Quickfire Pro.  Mine wobbled and they have an issue with not working in the BIOS while using NKRO.
Quickfire Rapid is much better.  I personally prefer MX black switches over red for gaming.  MX red feels way too light to me and I enjoy the smooth yet slightly firm actuation of the mx blacks.  Feels like I'm actually pressing something.

You can always use a USB numeric pad if you need one later; and you can position it however you want.

great choice there. I would've recommended any mechboard with reds due to your preference for FPS games. I myself play Quake Live and the reds are great for it. Before i had my Rosewill with reds, I had a Razer with blue switches which completely messed up my movement and aim. Some will tell you that it isn;t a problem, but in my experience it definitely was.

You'll initially have to get used to the easier actuation of the reds, especially since you're coming from a rubber-doamed board. It's totally worth it though, and typing on it feels great.  have fun!
