Anyone know about headphone modding/sleeving?
« on: Wed, 31 October 2012, 22:09:49 »
Hi guys,

Just got some new headphones and wanted to mod them to removable cables. I've been looking at this guide here:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-Your-Headphone-Cable-Removable/

Here is my parts list:
3.5mm to RCA cable - for donor cable. Will chop the 3.5mm part off and solder on the 1/8'' stereo plug. The RCAs will be chopped off and the 1/8'' mono plugs will be soldered on
1x stereo plug
2x mono plug

The cable will be sleeved in this:
Red/black paracord
Using this heatshrink:
1'' white headshrink

And finally holes drilled in the cans so these can be mounted in there for the mono end:
1/8'' micro mono panel mount jack - these will be soldered to the drivers

I've never sleeved or made my own cables before so let me know if I'm missing something. The only thing I'm not sure about is the split in the cable and how to deal with it...but I've seen multiple ideas like drilling holes in a dice and feeding the cable through there.
Thanks for the help guys :)

What headphones are you modding?

As for sleeving it's pretty easy, it can just be time consuming to "inch worm" the wire through the sleeve.

With paracord you're going to have to cut the ends, pull up the kernmantle rope just enough to grab (without fraying the nylon too badly) melt the nylon slightly and then pull out all of the kernmantle. It's a also good idea to cover the tips of your cut wire with masking tape before threading it through the paracord to prevent it from snagging or getting stuck.

They are jvc ha-s500. I haven't opened them up to see if there will even be enough room to mod them, but if there isn't I'll just sleeve the cable cause it looks nicer :)

Thanks for the tips too

Get good sleeve. I recommend and only use MDPC-X.

Check out this vid on sleeving to get an idea on how its done.

I found this gallery over on head-fi of someone who did a similar mod. http://www.head-fi.org/g/a/693198/jvc-ha-s500-recabled-and-modded/

boost is right MDPC-X is pretty much the defacto standard, but I have to disagree where he says it's the only thing to use. In general I would reccomend MDPC-X OR paracord.
If you were using techflex or some other plastic sleeving I would tell you not to do it. Most other plastic sleeving looks very cheap and you will probably see the wire through the sleeve. This is not the case with paracord, I think it's a good alternative to MDPC-X; just keep in mind it is nylon which is a fabric so it has a different look and feel.

I do like MDPC's sleeving but its expensive especially with shipping. Since the minimum order the 19 euro and 8 euro shipping its just $35+ for what I need which is 10m sleeve and some heatshrinks.

It was a little too late, sorry playah...

I used FTW sleeve and It was "OK" but haven't heard anything bad about the version 2.0 sleeve they got.
