Hello from Arizona
« on: Wed, 05 December 2012, 12:52:46 »
I am Don, and I know absolutely nothing about this stuff. It's got me very interested though :)

I'm a full-time engineering student and part-time kitchen knife maker. I love creating things and making stuff better.

Looking forward to learning a lot from you all!

Welcome to Geekhack!

Lurk for a while, read a few posts, and you will soon catch up.  There is not that much to learn, but so many nice things to buy.

Haev you got a mechanical keybaord yet?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Post some pics and info about your knives. Do you make the handles and blades yourself or just put pieces together?

If there is one thing I am scared of, I'm scared of getting addicted to something else I will spend a lot of money on :) I don't have a mechanical keyboard yet, but I really like the idea of one. I also like the idea of an ergonomic keyboard, but there isn't much selection for a mechanical ergo (and they're pretty pricey for me, right now). ONE DAY I would like to start learning how to make a keyboard, but that's probably a long time down the road.

Am I allowed to post a Facebook link to my knife site? I'll take it down if it's against the rules.

I do everything. I used to forge them, but for kitchen knives that are very long and thin, it's more efficient to do stock removal, until you start getting some really serious equipment or skills. I do all the grinding, heat treating, handle, finishing, etc.

Here's my latest one, a one-off santoku/nakiri hybrid:

Here's my gyuto prototype from earlier in the year:

The last two pictures are the same? That knife is really nice. About how much would that cost?

Fixed it!

The knives' prices depend on length (for basic options). They range from about $200 to $350. The santoku/nakiri is a few minor finish flaws so it's listed for $200 - less than it normally would. A similar knife to the prototype would run about $320.

Whoa!  Those are nice knives :)

If you have such great skills at making things, perhaps you could dive into making keycaps.

And if you are interested in making keyboards, have a look through making stuff together and in particular [Prototyping] GH60 Keyboard.

That's exactly the stuff I was looking for - awesome, thanks!

This place is already fantastic.

If your keyboard and/or keycap crafting skills are anywhere near as good as your knife-making skills, then you have a read-made market place too :)
