Gunnar Optiks
« on: Fri, 04 January 2013, 21:10:01 »
Found this deal while browsing through the webs.

Just sharing for those who are keen on getting a pair .

They cost like USD 35-47?

Which is WTF cheap to me compared to what is sold in Singapore.

What are those things do for you? I don't see how yellow shades can help you at counter strike.

Going by their website...

The Problem:

You spend most of your waking hours glued to your computer screen, smart phone, tablet or TV monitor. As the hours go by, you subject your eyes to harsh, high intensity blue light and glare from your screen. Constant viewing of digital screens can create visual stress, eye fatigue, dry eyes, irritation, and even headaches, leading to an obvious conclusion – staring at a computer for long hours can take a toll on your eyes.
The Solution:

GUNNARS increase contrast, comfort and focus while minimizing eye fatigue and visual stress for anyone who spends long hours staring at digital screens. GUNNAR eyewear is powered by i-AMP lens technology comprised of a proprietary lens material in an advanced geometry tuned for intermediate viewing distance and finished with custom formulated lens filters, tints and coatings.

They are for reducing eye strain. They also have a slight magnification effect, probably to make smaller text easier to read. I picked up a pair a few months ago but I can't tell you if they really help because I haven't been able to remember to wear them consistently, plus it could all just be a placebo effect. I figured it couldn't hurt cause I spend a large majority of my day in front of a monitor.

I dont use Gunnar Optik because their Prescription lens is expensive and not available in my country. But I had a pair of Glasses with tinted Green Lens. According to the Optometrist, she told me Green color help reduce eye strain.
I found it to be true, using this eyeglass at home all the time now.

Can you buy these without prescription?  This might solve my problem with FPS games...I get so dizzy after like 10-15 minutes of playing and have tried sitting further back/closer etc etc.  Didn't know something like this existed even

Well technically I believe they have a very light prescription in them. That's what helps improve your vision while wearing them. The yellow tint helps color the screen towards the warmer end of the color spectrum and that's part of what is supposed to reduce eye strain as well.

Found this website about Lens tinting and what it benefit: http://www.thehourglasses.com/lenses-info.php

Tinted
While some people think tinted lenses are merely cosmetic functions, the right tint can enhance vision and comfort at specific tasks, from in the office in front of a computer screen, to outdoor activities such as golf or skiing. Tints come in solids, gradients or double gradients, and can be a fun unique touch to your lenses.

Pink or Rose
This tint has been known to help reduce eyestrain in brightly-lit offices. This tint is often recommended for computer wearers.

Yellow
Often known as blue blockers, yellow tints are a favorite of skiers and skeet shooters because they provide excellent depth perception and low light contrast. Yellow lenses are not recommended when accurate color perception is necessary.

Brown or Amber
Similar to the yellow tint, brown tints provide excellent contrast because they filter some blue light, but not as much as the yellow tint. Brown lenses are excellent general purpose lenses.

Green
The human eye is most sensitive to green light. Because of this, green tints give us the highest contrast and greatest visual acuity of any tint. Green tints can enhance contrast in low-light conditions.

Gray
The most popular tint, a gray tint provides good protection from glare and does not overly distort colors. Gray tinted lenses are excellent for general purpose and for driving.

Purple
A good choice for hunters, purple tints allows for natural color perception while offering some shade from the sun.

Blue
Blue tints are not recommended for outdoor use because it can increase glare. It can be used as a fashion tint if used in lighter shades. If a blue tinted lens is desired for outdoor wear, be sure to consider the option of a brown or gray polarized lens with a blue flash mirror coat.

I've owned a pair for 2 years now and they really do help alot with eye strain. I used to get terrible headaches when gaming for 5+ hours in a row but they have stopped since I got my Gunnar's. It takes a bit of time to get used to the yellow tint and the slight magnification but they really do help in the long run.

I wish they had prescription Gunnars in Germany. I work on a PC all day and use the PC way to much outside of work so I could really use a pair. I don't like wearing contacts all day so none prescriptions + contacts aren't really a solution for me.

I play LANs and still laugh at the guys in Gunnars.  I'll wear yellow glasses if I'm out shooting trap or skeet, but I've never legitimately had an issue with picking up colors on a screen 18" away from me.  I know they might help eyestrain or whatever, but it's bad enough that I spend money on crap to be a computer nerd, I don't want to spend money to wear stuff that publicly proclaims it.

Even with all of the hate these are the only glasses on the market that prevent my screen-related migraines.

It's convenient to have fun color changing software running on your personal machine, but in a work environment it's not easy to install software with/without consent or get a doctors note for screen related "head-aches".

The lenses in gunnars are well worth $35, and each pair of frames I own (4 total) have taken enough abuse to warrant a bit of praise.

Well maybe I don't understand, but just wanted to add one more thing.

I used to have a problem with a frequency of light and flicker in fluorescent light when I was young.  The only option I had was to rely on a specialist who suggested I wore tinted and coated lenses to block out that wavelength of light.  It worked but at the time they made everything look very very strange.  Over time I built up a tolerance, but it's entirely too easy for me to tell if I'm under a fluorescent light, and older lights give me the same problems.  These glasses do everything my old lenses did without changing the visible spectrum in crude ways.

I don't understand why people hate on these. Is it a gimmick for games? Maybe. But if people report reduced eye strain then it is a viable option for people like me who have to sit in front of a PC at least 8 hours a day as part of their job. Why should I care if people think they make me look like a nerd. I'm a programmer, I am a nerd and it's not like its a secret or I give a damn if others think I am.I have over 7+ on both eyes on my prescription, so if these help than I really don't care about looks. Plus its not like you need to wear them when you are walking around.

Plus owning a customized mechanical keyboard is nerdy as hell anyway, so I think that ship has sailed for all of us :P

They do seem to help with eye strain, when i remember to wear them.
The"too geeky", and "not worth it" comments crack me up, you're willing to spend how much on a keyboard, but saving your eyes isn't worth it.

I do think the marketing is bad though. Why take aim at gamers, aim for office workers who spend all day in front a computer instead.

they aren't just yellow colored, if that was the case and just that simple  i wouldn't have gotten a second pair. but hey, its pretty easy to see yellow in a picture and automatically judge they are just yellow tinted glasses and everyone is a fool for buying them.

For those of you that didn't a chance to pick a pair of Gunnar's up, a great FREE alternative is to use F.lux.

I've been using this for years and it's always helped out. Recently I switched over to my friend's computer, opened a browser and WHAM! That blank white chrome starter page really hits you after you've gotten used to Flux.

EDIT: Lol just noticed, the comments on the homepage are kind of hilarious XD

Hmm, might be jumping in here too late. Only buy these glasses if you're having problems with your eyes sitting in front of a computer for too long.
