[GB] ErgoDox Assembly Services (Massdrop) [CLOSED]
« on: Tue, 15 January 2013, 04:34:06 »
This group buy is for a service that is being put on Internationally on by me (Prof). I am offering 3 different tiers of assembly Basic Assembly, Spring or Stem Swap, and Lubed Switches. When ordering from Massdrop everything you need is included, but incase there is something you would like to change or add please feel free to order those parts from my Phantom Parts and Assembly GB (please note that these go with a ErgoDox that i am building for you).

I will not be offering PCBs in this GB because you can already pick them up from Massdrop. The assembly services are guaranteed, which means that your keyboard will not leave or be shipped until it is fully tested and working.

This GB closes February 3rd 2013. Please order using this form.

Assembly Service Now on Massdrop!

Quote from: Payment & Shipping

Payment: Invoices will be sent out to your paypal email once the GB closes. You will have 1 week to pay the invoice

Shipping: Shipping will be quoted and invoiced once your order is completed, packaged, and ready to ship because of the infinitely different amount of items that can be ordered. You items WILL NOT SHIP until you pay the invoice for the shipping.

**note: the spring or stem swap and lubed switches both include basic assembly**
**note: all extra/leftover parts that your ordered will be sent to you with your ErgoDox unless specified**
**note: if your looking for a cable contact MiMiC or order a cable directly through his thread.**

Nice service! Please clarify some logistics though:
Are people supposed to buy the kits through massdrop, receive them, then mail them to you? Or you can also buy on their behalf from massdrop if you get paid in advance?

Also regarding the stem/spring swaps, are users supposed to find all parts and send them to you, or you have the required alternative stems/springs, and what cost, if any, is involved for these parts?

Finally, do you have red and brown switches (since massdrop doesn't currently) and what's the extra cost to add them ?
Kinesis Contoured Advantage & Advantage2 LF with Cherry MX Red switches / Extra keys mod / O-ring dampening mod / Dvorak layout. ErgoDox with buzzer and LED mod.
Also: Kinesis Advantage Classic, Kinesis Advantage2, Data911 TG3, Fingerworks Touchstream LP, IBM SSK (Buckling spring), Goldtouch GTU-0077 keyboard

that would work but wouldnt be very cost effective. I havnt contact massdrop but do you think that they could ship direct to me? otherwise as long as i get paid in advance i could buy from massdrop myself if they cant ship directly to me

you can send some to me if you already have some otherwise you should be able to get everything you need from my other GB for Phantom Parts and Assembly

yes red and brown are both available in my other GB as well as others.

AFAIK there are 84 switches on the ErgoDox, not 76.  Same concept would still apply, though.

Yup, and Massdrop states they include some extra components... which is very helpful if you damage any during assembly.

The aluminum case from Massdrop is out (http://i.imgur.com/yb3mn0A.jpg) and the screws are really sticking out IMO.

Prof, would you be able to offer assembly with countersunk screws?

no because the case is made the same way as the acrylic so i believe the pieces are too thin for a counter sunk screw. I can try to find flat head screw though

It will still hold by the edges, isn't it? Just have to be careful when drilling.

I know many of you are not going to be happy about this but after lubing a bunch of keyboards in the recent week and talking with the other people that will be helping be build I am going to have to raise the price on lubing $10 to cover for the fairly large amount of time involved. if you would like to change your order because of this please let me know as I have no problem changing your order.

PM'd this question, but figured I might as well ask it publicly. If I fill out this form and the Phantom Parts GB form (since I want different switches than what MD offers), could you send a giant quote for the Dox, switches, and service?

Also, is there any chance of providing some kind of rubber feet added or something to help with the screws coming out the bottom?

Hi Profosist,

I'm interested in your assembly services, as I am too busy to do it myself at the moment. However I seem to have missed the massdrop deadline. I've messaged them to see if I can still partake. If I can, do I just get the parts shipped to you? I'm in the UK.

Cheers,
EF

Profosist,

I want to procure your assembly services.  I ordered my ErgoDox without switches because I already have some.

Since your form is down, I assume we can only order your services through massdrop.  Yes? No?
The massdrop page says, "ONLY JOIN IF YOU WANT YOUR ERGODOX SENT TO THE PROFOSIST FOR ASSEMBLY."

Can I just have my ErgoDox sent to me like normal, and then I send you all the parts?

How much would shipping the switches to you cost?  I'm in Florida, USA.

I'm trying to see which would cost less:

1)
  • Massdrop sends my ErgoDox kit (minus switches) to you via the assembly service group buy. ($15 shipping)
  • I send my switches to you. ($X shipping)
  • You send the competed keyboard to me.  ($0 shipping - already included in the beginning)
2)
  • Massdrop sends my ErgoDox kit (minus switches) to me. ($0 shipping)
  • I send my ErgoDox kit with switches to you. ($Y shipping)
  • You send the competed keyboard to me.  ($Z shipping)
So I'm wondering which is less:
  • 15 + X
  • Y + Z
Sorry if I'm making this more complicated than it should be.   ;D  I was looking forward to seeing the beautiful ErgoDox PCB and case et al. before they were assembled.  ^-^

I was originally going to have it built by you, but the shipping cost listed for the assembly service to Canada is $47 (compared to what seems to be $15 to the US, based on planet36's post). That's more than the cost of the service itself, which is a pretty big deterrent.

I'm a bit confused about it too because I originally only paid $6 to have the Ergodox shipped to me in Canada, so I don't understand why it's so much for the assembly. Might be worth talking to Massdrop about if they're the ones who set the price?

about the shipping thats how much flat rate USPS international costs. I believe Massdrop was only charging 6$ it costs much more than that to ship international especially if you have an aluminum case.

Unfortunately it looks like this is what happened :(

I signed up for the assembly service on MD but now it doesn't show up in my orders anymore and they also sent the kit to my address instead of Profosist's. And I know 100% that I signed up for it, I even bugged MD multiple times to add my home country as a shipping option. Also if I now click on the page for the assembly group buy to e.g. see the discussion of the group buy I just get an error message, so from this perspective it looks very much like cancelled :(

I'm curious to hear from other people who signed up for the assembly group buy on MD.

Edit:
Looks like the link to the group buy is broken but it's easy to fix, you can access it under https://www.massdrop.com/buy/ergodox-assembly/talk. So maybe it's not cancelled but my order somehow got lost, I have no idea.

What don't you ask a question in the discussion page? I just checked the link you supplied and nobody has posted anything since February 2 !

I guess no one has asked because the link is broken :) (if you access it from the list of group buys on the MD page)

I mailed them about my lost order of course and they responded very quickly but the only thing they said is that they have no idea how this happened :)

Since my kit has been shipped there isn't much they can do anyway, so I guess it means I have to revive my soldering skills and try to do the assembly myself :)

Sounds like things are on track. Will from Massdrop contacted me today with a new invoice for the assembly service because my original Paypal payment did not go through for some reason.

He said the kit would be shipped to Profosist today if paid today. If not paid by Wednesday the kit would just be sent to me.

Maybe some other folks are in the same boat. FYI. YMMV.

I got the same notice, yesterday.  I'm still waiting for Will to send me a new Invoice, though.

My fiance ordered an ErgoDox with the assembly service (as reflected on the shipping manifest included in the box), but received an unassembled kit shipped directly from MassDrop.

I've contacted MassDrop, will post again when I get a response.

Prof was in the IRC last evening, he has told me that the eDoxen will not be assembled fully until he has all the parts, as MassDrop did not pack all the necessary materials. I will pull my IRC logs in a bit, if asked.

Figured I'd post for transparency.  It seems there was a miscommunication between Prof and MassDrop, which lead to him never receiving the replacement parts that he needed (the ones that were missing from the kits).  He's working that out with MD, now.

He would need to offload ergodox off of geekhack and deskthority to make a profit. maybe we should implement a system to prevent that from happening.

Yeah, too bad there isn't some way to red flag a person to give people a heads up if this does happen. Sometimes it's best to be proactive about stuff like this because there isn't much that can be done once it happens.

I do feel for you guys though. I'm still waiting for switches and stabilizers so that I can start building my Phantoms and LZ-GH.

I received notice from Massdrop last week that they are having kits returned to them, and that they will be handling shipment/reimbursements for assembly charges.  If you ordered the build services through Massdrop for the original ErgoDox buy, if you haven't received any notices, I'd reach out to Massdrop to check.

That seems to be the information that they're providing, currently.  That kits are being shipped back to MD for distribution back to intended parties.  With that said, though, they are running another Dox buy currently - could always mask the missing kits with new kits sent to us.

That's gotta be some miracle to get Prof to spend money AND time to ship it out. If this is true though, I don't see why he can't do the same for all the phantom stuff he's supposedly holding.

If MassDrop just ordered more new kits to replace the missing ones, that's a huge loss, and Prof just gets to keep the kits he has with him.

Sadly, this whole thing could have been cleared up with something as simple as better communication. I wouldn't doubt that he's busy with everything going on, everyone has that happen, but at the moment it looks more like he cut and run, at least until things cool down, rather than just pop in to post every so often.

how are they going to have it returned to them when it's already in Prof's hands? He ain't gonna ship it back, that's for sure.

From what he told me it's already shipped, he even included a photos of the UPS drop-off package receipt and more. There's more to it, but I guess people are mostly interested in the shipment to MD. I urged him to post here but he didn't (yet), which is why I'm posting this tidbit now.

I for one am disappointed that I won't get an assembled ErgoDox after all, and (it seems) all because of a communication failure between MD and TheProfosist. From my own experience with MD so far (most good, some bad), his story sounds credible. To be fair, there are 2 sides to every story, and I haven't heard their side yet.

BTW I just received this update from MD:
Quote
I know it seems like a big mess. I can assure you that once we heard about TheProfosist's inability to assemble the keyboards, we got them over here as fast as possible. The keyboards came in last night from TheProfosist, and I spent the entire night ensuring that everyone who ordered through him had their custom parts in order, as well as the basic assembly pieces as well. The packages are all now packaged up, with tracking numbers, and are being shipped. Please keep note that the tracking numbers may not work until they are registered in USPS's system.

I can assure you, Oliver, that the keyboards spent a maximum of around 12 hours at Massdrop (less had it not been in the night!) and the entire Massdrop team knew the situation that all of you had gone through with TheProfosist. We all worked together to make sure you did not have to wait any longer.

I hope that now, at least, the keyboard is on its way and will get to you very shortly.

MassDrop are really good people it seems, I think the only complaints about massdrop I've seen are from people who have never got anything from massdrop and are still *****ing about the sign up requirement. It is good to see they are attempting to resolve this the best they can.

My personal experience with MD when **** went down was a very positive one. They are surprisingly extremely customer oriented, and I'm not surprised they stepped in to make things good for this GB. I won't be surprised if MD paid for the shipping back to them too.

It does suck big time that the people who got in this service had to wait so long and still not receive an assembled kit though. And I would've signed up for it if I didn't already have a board to be done by WFD at the time, and decided to ask him to assemble my spare kit instead. I'm glad I did so, but I do feel for those participating in this, esp given this was from round 1 and peeps from round 2 have already gotten their kits up and running.

And I would've signed up for it if I didn't already have a board to be done by WFD at the time, and decided to ask him to assemble my spare kit instead. yeah I am very impressed on massdrop's service. They did everything they could to manage the Prof situation. I'm sure they had to pay for the shipping cost out of their own pocket from prof to massdrop and then delivery out again.

on a side note, that is a very nice looking ergodox.

Why isn't Profosist banned here on GH?  Inability to do what he promised, inability to do what he advertised, inability to own up his end of the bargain, inability to communicate, inability to right his wrongs.  Over and over and over again.

Profosist gives a bad name to our ErgoDox.
