Thanks guys.  Painting it was a pain in the ass.  Even thin coats had a tendency to fill the "grain" and sit on the surface, so after each thin coat I had to blot with a paper towel to push the paint into the grain and remove excess paint.  Ended up applying more thinner coats than I would normally do, but it was a nice day and I had the time, for once, so it was worth it.

i was going to do exactly what you did (with klaxon and all) with mine but was worried this would happen.

I didn't even think of it until I started to paint.  Necessity is the mother of invention, I guess.  I think it worked out fine in the end.

Interesting idea! Gotta try it when I can get ahold of a brush.

For people looking for a wood texture, have you considered drybrushing it? Give it a dark base coat (or use a black case) and then paint lightly using a lighter color with a brush that's almost dry. The paint will only stick to the raised areas, highlighting the texture. Do it with multiple colors of varying dryness to increase the effect.

Notice how the wood is darker in the cracks?

I'll do some experiments if I can find the materials.
