Keycaps Fontface and fontsize (from WASD)
« on: Mon, 01 April 2013, 20:12:48 »
This is my first post here so hi everyone  ;)

I Just bought a noppoo mini with red mx switches (typing from a blackwidow with blues right now) and was planning to buy some keycaps from WASDkeyboards and replace my new noppoo keycaps entirely (well, excluding that bastard space key). I started messing around with their Adobe Illustrator Template and added some shortcuts for VIM and Bash (Emacs mode) since my noppoo will be mainly used at linux machines. I used Consolas 16pt for the "main legend" (like the letters, symbols and so on) and Consolas 6pt for the shortcuts. For the Bash shortcuts, I used Futura Itallic / Bold 6pt. For all the other legends I used Consolas 12pt (For the F keys and numbers) and finally Consolas 8pt for the Page Up / Insert / etc keys.

Well, my question is: Is Consolas 16pt to big for the "main" legends in this keyboard. Even for the 6pt shortcuts, is it too small? I ask because it seens "OK" in the Illustrator screen but it may come up as a giant legend when I receive the printed keys from WASD (and paying for a new batch of keys because of the size its a no go obviously).

This is how the key looks currently inside Illustrator (100% zoom):

And with 300% zoom:

Any suggestion is welcome. Thanks!

this is a pretty awesome idea. unfortunately i can't answer your question, but will love to see the outcome.
i do know that the wasd site has some key cap photos with sizes/fonts (in the engraved section). maybe that can assist you.
either way, good luck!

In their Custom Keycap Designer, you can have only two legends per key and each legend has only one style. A style includes a font, weight, size, slant and justification.
However, you can let a legend span multiple lines and I think that also blank newlines and spaces to the left of a character are allowed.
For instance, I made my Swedish ISO #9 character as two legends: left-justified ")<newline>9" and right-justified "<newline>]".
WASD's engraving is a bit crude, so it might be the totally wrong choice for this. I would advise laser-etching.

+1 laser etching being the better option
60% keyboards, 100% of the time.

Yes, I just read my first post again to be sure haha. I will use laser etching for sure, it looks a lot better for my tastes.
About the legends, when using their keycap design, you have an option to upload an Illustrator / Corel file with all the keycaps already made. This way you can etch pretty much anything (with any font size / face) on the keycaps without any limitation.

Still Im worried about the font sizes. Did anyone use their service before and could provide some pics of the final results (and the font face / size used)?

Really I would have thought the 6pt would have been too small
