MX White mini group buy
« on: Mon, 15 April 2013, 13:12:29 »
Rapid online offers Cherry MX White switches for a fairly reasonable price, but charges quite a bit for shipping to the US. As such I would like to let a couple more people join in my order.
Newcomers have until the end of Sunday the 21st (CST) to order and until the end of Sunday the 28th to pay. (This does not apply to the two orders I already have, these people may wait until the order is sent to pay, but any money over this I simply don't have available). The order will be sent shortly after that and the switches sent to you all as soon as they get to me.

I have emailed rapid asking about switch availability and will not allow any orders over this. Assuming there are enough switches, the first few people will be allowed entry.  I don't have the time to deal with a larger buy.

The amount you pay will be the cost of your switches plus shipping, which is $5 to ship to you (USPS small flat rate box) in addition to the total cost of shipping divided by the number of buyers.

For anyone interested in getting these on their own-

What's the price after shipping for each switch?

For 1100 pcs $504.32
Delivery    $97.18
Sub Total    $601.51
VAT    $0.00
Order Total    $601.51

It is going to be way too much..

Comes out to about $.55 each + shipping to the person...

They are in fact PCB mount. this should still work on DIYs like GH60 and ErgoDox as well as factory made PCB boards like pokers. If you wish to use it on a factory plate mounted board you might have to remove pins.

To order just make a post with the number of switches you would like.

I do realize it is quite pricey, but there aren't many better options. If you're willing to wait till September/October 7bit could work. For GH60ers this is a good option. I'm personally getting an ErgoDox a lot sooner than a GH60 and don't want the wait on switches.

Confirm delivery date of these switches first before you already jump into ordering. They do not have these in stock and you need to find out their ETA.

They say "806 available" and then "back order".  You definitely want to get an ETA.

I thought MX1A-A1NN were plate mounted and MX1A-A1NW were PCB mounted (or With locating pins)

Definitely plate mount. You can see the difference in their offerings of these Blacks. They post pictures of the PCB mount which have the pins. Those Whites don't.

I have sent an email asking for the ETA. Will post back here as soon as I hear back.

I asked them if the switches were plate or pcb and they said pcb. They could also have no idea what they're doing.

Whites are similar to blues but with a softer click and have a heavier spring like greens.

Honestly I haven't tried them myself either, but I'm tempted to jump on this if it gets going.

I'd be interested in 120 or so.  Enough for a full-size board plus spares.

I have Whites on the SkiData board, they are my favorite switch, only contenders for me are the MX Greens.

There's going to be a bit of a back order this late in either way for anyone joining past the 806 switches. Estimated at 2-3 weeks.

I was going to cut off new entries, but I suppose I have room for one more for you.

Seeing as I have to wait for Monday (To let my bank know a transaction of this volume is coming in) anyway I suppose I can deal you in.

Though I'll have to ask for payment you before I place the order EZ due to the fact you've barley been here at all.

Quick update- I was able to get a better deal than listed on the site due to the order size.

After everything is shipped I'll do a real price vs projected price refund. Should be bout 5-10 bucks each.

Order still isn't placed because time zones create huge issues with communications. Takes three days to ask a question, get an answer, and respond.

What would a good weight of korean springs to pair up with these? 45g, 55g, 62g?

It comes down to preference. I think 62g or 55g would be a good match. 45g may be too light, they're lighter than mx brown or mx red springs.

When you guys get these, please report back if the clicking is inconsistent between switches. The bag of mx whites I have do not have uniform clicking. Some click more than others.

My race with whites is like that iirc. They all feel the same though. Some just seen to click less or more.

Black.

There is debate whether it actually is a black spring. For now it has been confirmed that White and Greens have identical springs.

FWIW (sorry about the crappy pics):

Some length, same diameter, same number of coils, and the same wire thickness.  These are modern switches.  The vintage black springs are different and the white switch has been through at least three generations over the years.

So, one clicky, one tactile, and one linear?  But all the same spring strength?

I like White and Green switches interchangeably, but I tend to bottom out the linear Blacks.  I must be unconsciously expecting the feedback to clue me in as to switch closure.

Maybe Blacks would work better with red rubber rings...

Well, you have to be take the leaf spring into account on any tactile switch.  That is why the actuation force of the green/white is higher than the black.  Not only are you compressing the coil spring, but you are deflecting the leaf spring of the contact further outward as it rides over the little bump on the stem.  The stems of linear switches are smooth.

i am typing on an ergo white modded board right now and i can indeed confirm that there is approximately 1 in 30 switches that has a slightly different click sound. i have experienced this with both pcb and plate mounted boards it is definitely a switch issue.

the most accurate i could describe it would be, that they are different in terms of hollowness/reverb of the click, some just sound dryer than others. there are fluctuations towards both extremes, so some might get near blue sharpness and some might have their click on a very low sound level instead.

i'll have to test if my microphone is actually capable of recording this properly, if so i could post a video later should someone be interested.

The ones that are too clicky can be fixed by making sure that the slider is greased appropriately.  A tiny dab in the rail between the slider and the stem is all that is needed.  The ones that are especially quiet might have a defect.  The ones I ran across did not appear to have too much grease.  Rather they had some other problem that caused the slider and stem to bind.  They can usually be fixed with an exacto.

Basically Rapid decided to up the price on me. I'm still doing it, but at a small loss. It took a while since I tried to get a few quotes post price raise.

I'm thinking I'll like offer to test each switch and replace defects with some of my personal extras (I have plenty) for like $.02 a switch to help make up for losses.

You might have them ship what they have on hand, so they don't sell it to another buyer while the back-ordered switches are on the way...

It sounds like they might split and ship for free. Probably on account of feeling sorry for having to raise the price on me.

If this is the case I have three ideas as for priority, any feedback would be nice.

1. Simple first to order first to receive

2. Based on the project they're used for (would try to get to people who already have pcbs sooner than say gh60 people)

3. Buy priority (if not enough slots bought remainder will go to option 1 or 2). The price raise cost me 200 bucks extra. By paying a part of this, to be decided with your switch count and math, you can receive your switches earlier.

darn it i missed out on this, but if there are extras Id be interested in 2-3 if possible for a switch testing board :)

If you like, I'm also doing a tour with a Mr. Interface Switch Try bag. It has a MX White switch in it :D. You could sign up and play with it ^__^

thanks for the offer, but i meant that I'm putting together a similar bag, except they will be soldered onto a board, and MX white is the last switch i need to complete my test set

Is this a completely closed deal at this point?  I'm looking for a batch of MX Whites (~87 of them :))  I'd buy 1 switch too, for playing purposes.

So, there are 2000ish of these. That's a lot of counting, so I won't be able to ship them all out at once most likely.

Now, I had to pay Rapid 1160 for all of these. I billed for 923 so far. What concerns me is that that gives me 923 total. Or -189.

I don't like being 189 in the drain, so I'm going to let some of you buy order priority. Meaning that if I can only count so many before I ship, they'll be yours.
I'll try to ship them all asap, and if I can do them all the same day I will. But there's 2000, and it's probably going to be a multi day thing.

I am about 200 down, and ordered about 2000 switches, so it's $0.12 a switch to earn a spot on the list. If you want to be nice and pay more that that to help with possible shipping losses or lack of enough other people buying priority too, I'll throw in something special (handmade, though admittedly worthless). Why not 0.10? Because not everyone can be on it. That would defeat the point. Ask me before you send money because I need to see if there's room for you on the list first.

EDIT- I'm an idiot, my billing included shipping. Shipping is another 110. So make that .16 a switch.

I may be able to perfectly accommodate this, depending on when you need yours.  I ordered 85 for my GH60, so depending on the layout I build I may have exactly this many extras.  Of course I won't know for sure until I build my GH60, so that's less than ideal.

Thank you.  Probably in the next couple months is when I'd be looking to mod one of my keyboards.  I'm far too impatient to wait longer than that.

Shipping out the first set of people's tomorrow or Saturday. The rest next week and possibly some the week after. I'll try to make sure people using them for boards that aren't here yet like the gh60 (exempting people who got priority) ship later, so I don't keep people with pcbs in hand waiting too long.

With that I'd like to mention there is a possibility of a miscount, if you find you are missing any switches shoot me a pm and I'll send the missing ones over in a bubble mailer.

Pretty sure yours are already bagged, wanted to bag two more last night and didn't know who was making what so I just picked a couple. If anyone else ordered the same number I can change the name on the bag, but if not they'll just have to sit around and taunt you ;).

Well, I'm not saying I'd turn them down, if you've got them packed already!   :))

But if you do get any urgent requests, feel free to put mine aside for later shipping.

Got a day off on friday (and tomorrow, but that's the 4th of july) so I'll be shipping all the switches I can then. Should hopefully be the rest of them.
Most of you will get your switches next week, and the two Canadians god only knows when. Never shipped internationally before so I don't know how long border stuff takes.

1) How do whites feel, are the clicky and tactile as blues?
2) whats the spring feeling, feeling like reds, or blacks or in between?

1) Feels like a very heavy clicky switch (Read Blue) with a soft muted click.
2) Heavier than Blacks. Maybe on the same level as Greens.

thanks bro, seems like a good switch where you can leave the stock springs for the modifiers and exchange the rest with 65g. Wonder if OP plans to run another GB.

2) Heavier than Blacks. Maybe on the same level as Greens.

I haven't found that to be the case, but I've been typing mostly on my MX-Blacks recently.

I trust your opinion though, so I'm going to have to compare them again.  ;D

They're all bagged and ready to ship friday.

There were a few extras in the bag from rapid, and by a few I mean 163. After I make sure everyone got their full amount I'll decide what to do with these. And please don't pm me asking for them, I'll post a classified when I'm ready.

Well let me know what you found out mashby. I'd be interested in comparing notes ^__^

CWD, I tested all the switches last night and counted them just to double check. All the switches click and there's no duds so I'm stoked. Thanks again for running this buy! :D  Oh and no, I don't have extras, sorry to disappoint the vultures :P

I thought of that, but I will ionly have 81 of them after I mod the TG3, not enough for full board. So what I think of doing is to use black springs for the modifiers, whole F row and the extra 4 keys, NAV and arrows and modifiers around the tenkey, the rest alpha and numeric with 65g, 65g is still tad heavier than the blur/red/brown spring. I would of gone 67g or 70g but sherry don't have those

Received mine, thanks for artwork, installed into Phantom.  I actually like the Whites, though they may be a bit heavy for my delicate hands.

Thanks for running the smooth group buy.
