Question regarding modded Clears
« on: Sun, 21 April 2013, 17:59:51 »
I currently have an ergo-clear (brown springs) Quickfire Rapid. I'm thinking of changing them to either 55g, 62g, or 65g Korean springs.
I've noticed that one or two keys are sticky and have read that it has something to do with the lightness of the brown spring.

What do you guys think? Does anyone have experience with either of these three different weights?

I switched to 55g after stock browns (w/ my ergo clear poker), I'm honestly not sure it's worth it.

What was different after the switch? Lighter? Heavier? Different resistance at certain part of the actuation?

It felt really really similar, that why I'm not quite sure if it's worth it

Aren't browns and 55g extremely close in weight anyways, like within 5g of one another?

If they're sticking with browns, I would think anything under 62g would harbor the same results.

Mine are lube and I only have sticking issues if I type slowly (w/ 55g)

On stock brown springs, I never had sticking issues (also lubed)

Lube them imo :)

lube the clears, consider changing the modifier keys and the larger keys to browns. Some keys like ctrl alt shift are held down, which exacerbates the sticking problem, even when lubed. Other considerations are keys like backspace space and enter, typically the larger keys, doesn't really require the extra tactility that ergo clears provide. Changing those to browns might serve for a better experience.

Surprisingly, the modifiers are fine. It's mostly the ` key and a couple other sporadic 1x1 keys. I've been told that getting stiffer springs will help.

keymaster PMed me about his a few days ago, so I'm just going to post the PMs in case it helps anyone else:

Hi WFD,

Your tutorial with the ergo-clears inspired me to buy a QFR w/ ergo-clears from l3oilermaker. I need your advice/insight.

One or two of the switches are "sticky" and lag behind coming back on the upstroke.  From what I've read, it has something to do with the lightness of the MX Brown spring. Is there any way to fix this? I just ordered some Krytox from the GB for future switch lubing and I'm planning to get a solder kit from Amazon.

Thanks.
Hi keymaster,

It's not the springs. I've built 55g ergo clears before and they don't stick, although it was lubed. The ergo clear tutorial video used mx red springs, and they were all fine. I'm guessing the two keys are from stabilizer keys? If not, then some part in those keys are out of tolerance and rubbing too much where it's not suppose to. Open up the switch and take a look inside. Inspect all the parts, starting from the metal leaf thingy that sticks out (not sure what it's called). If it's too frustrating, just replace the switch completely. Although I don't remember boilermaker buying a custom plate from me, so with stock QFR plate you'll have to desolder to remove the switch.

I would offer to send it me and I'll just fix it for you, but I have a million things to take care of right now. If you haven't fixed this issue by the end of June, feel free to send it to me.

Cheers,
WFD

Thanks for offering to fix it sometime in the future. I think I'll attempt to fix it myself. I'm probably going to lube it, so I'm going to desolder all the switches. It's mainly the ` key that's sticking -- the stabilizer keys are fine. Since I'm going to desolder the switches and lube them, would you suggest to replace the springs with 62g Korean springs? Btw, how do lubed ergo-clears feel in comparison to non-lubed?
A heavier spring will help with the sticking, but it makes the tactile bump less.

Any switches lubed feels amazing. Hard to descbribe, so it's one of those things you have to try yourself. Most people complain about how long it takes, but afterwards, they all say it's worth it

good luck.

I had a problem with sticking keys when I did my ergo clears mod. I lubed all the switches and made all modifiers into regular clears. There was one key that was still sticking! It turned out that I had damaged the metal shim inside of the switch.

55's and brown/red/blue springs are really close and odds are you won't even feel a difference.

You have to be careful when lubing this combo as the lube initially can cause some stiction, the thinner the better. It will usually fix itself, but it can take a few days. Also you only want to lube the spring ends and sliders/tracks, not the switch itself.
