Geekhack has the best wiki!

http://wiki.geekhack.org/index.php?title=Cherry_MX_Red

Awesome!  I am about to get my first keyboard with MX reds - time to do some in-depth research from the GH wiki! :D
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I've never used the GH wiki.

*ducks*

The voluminous Geekhack wikis were awesome and miles better than DT before the r00tw0rm ate them.

Actually, big part of it was just ripster's BS, so I'm not really sure. Maybe there was something relevant, but I couldn't find it in that mess.

BS or not, there was a mountain of information there. I still give him credit for the entire foundation of my knowledge of keyboards.

What is going on with this forum?

Lots of strong opinions and many don't actually own a mechanical board?
Plenty of people here have very strong opinion about boards they never used too.

Happy to be corrected if I am wrong but from my limited experience, this is what I'm finding/ have found.

"many don't actually own a mechanical board"... WTF?!

You're wrong.

Some own more than one...

And some own some very interesting/unique ones too...

But if by 'mechanical' you mean the latest trending minor variant on the TKL theme, possibly replete with unicorn vomit keycaps, then maybe there isn't much there for you. That's not DT's problem...

Yeah. This is total crap. I don't think I've ever seen anyone asking 'What's a good first mechanical board?' on Deskthority. There are far more newbies with no mechanical experience here on Geekhack.

As for bling, the full-metal-Filco just got left in the dust.

Those posts were actually hoarded into the "Keyboard Oracle" thread due to their repetitive nature and irrelevance to other posters.  It's sad the thread has been somewhat abandoned, mostly due to the "oracle" beind on a sabbatical.

in all honesty, I dont' see the reasoning behind this pissing match between DT and GH. They're full of basically the same people, with the same niche interest(s) and yet there has to be this inane back-and-forth about which is better. It's all a my-dad-can-beat-up-your-dad mentality.

Lots of strong opinions and many don't actually own a mechanical board?

Non mechanical represents a vast majority of the key boars population. Their opinion counts.

Wow, I just read this for the first time.  You really get a sense of how much they hated ripster over at DT.

As for a forum war, that is really a stupid idea.  Why does there have to be animosity?

But, I do hope we win that poll.  Even though I don't know waht a ping poll is.

or get hit by a bus. or eat a pizza. or go for a walk.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.
