Hammer Titanium Keycap Group Buy (Order closed)
« on: Thu, 30 May 2013, 03:03:29 »
After doing the interest check a few weeks ago, Hammer and I have finally arranged to run this group buy. Basically we have three kinds of titanium keycaps for this round including spacebar, left/right shift keys, and Control/Alt/Menu/Win keys.

Deadline: July 31th. Depending on the number of order we have, we will most likely proceed the first batch of production before the deadline (e.g. if we reach 20 spacebar orders by June 15th, the first batch of production will start on June 15th). There also might be 2nd and 3rd batches of production depending on the number of orders we have in a certain period.

What’s available?

Two Lengths for Spacebar: 6.25x and 7x.
Three Lengths for Modifier Keys: 1.0x, 1.25x, and 1.5x.
Three choices of stems for Spacebar: 3 Stems, 4 Stems, and 6 Stems.
Three profiles for ALL keys: Cherry, OEM, and SP.
Two Thicknesses for ALL keys: 1.0mm and 1.5mm.
Three Finishes for ALL keys: Shiny, Sandblasted, and Brushed.

Shiny:
23719-023722-123724-223727-323729-423731-5

Sandblasted:
23733-623744-723746-823748-9

Brushed:

23736-1023738-1123740-1223742-13

Two Finishes (Brushed surface and sandblasted four sides)

23750-1423752-1523754-1623756-1723758-1824799-19

Detailed Explanation:

6.25x spacebar is for most keyboards on the market including Filco, Ducky, WASD, Das, Leopold, Poker, Pure, etc. 7x spacebar is mainly for some Korean custom keyboards like KMAC winkeyless, LZ winkeyless, Cheat, 356/456, and some vintage Cherry keyboards.

Modifier keys for this round include Control, Alt, Menu, Windows and Fn. You can also order blank ones of course. 1.25x modifier keys are generally used on Filco, Ducky, etc. 1.5x and 1.0x modifier keys are mainly for winkeyless and 86-layout keyboards. FYI, you can order four of the 1.0x blank modifier keys to make it an Arrow keyset since they are all R1 keys (the bottom two rows on a keyboard).

Spacebar with 3 stems can be used on most OEM keyboards including Filco, Ducky, WASD, Das, Poker, Pure, Keycool, etc. And the ones with 4 stems are particularly for a few keyboards such as Cherry G80-3000 series. The ones with 6 stems should be able to fit most keyboards including Leopold FC200R.

Cherry Profile: the stock-on keycaps from Cherry’s keyboards.

OEM Profile: the stock-on keycaps from most OEM keyboards on the market including Filco, Ducky, Das, WASD, etc.

SP Profile: many of the geekhack group buys have brought us keycaps from Signature Plastic, and most of these keycaps (except for a few kinds like the latest group buy of DSA sets) have what we call SP profile.
Thickness: 1.0mm is what we had in the last group buy of Titanium spacebar. Basically the 1.0mm version of titanium keycaps are already pretty heavy, I would recommend most of you taking this thickness. However, we also provide 1.5mm thickness for those who really need extra thickness and don’t mind the extra weight. The extra thickness does not cost any additional fees.

“Two Finishes on One Key” --- It means that you can have two different finishes on one keycap. For example, you may choose shiny surface, and brushed four sides of the keycap.

For the shift keys, we only provide 2.25x left shift and 2.75x right shift for most of the standard keyboards for now.

The font we have picked is Arial Rounded. It’s similar to Cherry font.
24801-20

So thicker doesn't = more expensive?

Will there be a round 3? If so, what caps are going to be in that one? I'd like to spread the cost a bit, but not miss any caps. What I want is quite a chunk of change that I'd like to spread out a bit more

Tym wants; but can he justify the price? Hopefully the exchange rate drops dramatically within the next 30 days.
unless they have some unforeseeable downside (like they're actually made of cream cheese cunningly disguised as ABS)

Oh Feng, too many choices.

Definitely want some more spacers, but the Control/Alt/Windows/Menu are very nice.

Have to decide soon, how much to spend.

Milling is different from injecting plastic..   Thicker means less milling in this case. material cost is the same.. if anything thicker should be cheaper, :D

Also, Feng, Could you ask Hammer, which grade of Titanium alloy he's using?

Thicker actually means less CNC working time, but the material still costs the same as 1.0mm version. I have no idea if there will be a round 3 or not. Hammer's schedule is really unstable. He's normally pretty busy, so nothing can be guaranteed right now.

I hope next round would have Caps Lock, Enter, Tab, and Backspace to complete the modifier set

I just hope the next round won't happen in the next year. But yeah, if there's a round 3, it gotta be something different.

Why is better the titanium then the aluminium or zink caps beside its exclusiveness?

I don't konw much about those materials. But I've heard that titanium is stronger than aluminum. Zinc is like the cheapest metal, so I think it can't be compared with aluminum and titanium.

Also, Feng, Could you ask Hammer, which grade of Titanium alloy he's using?

Just got this from Hammer:
23810-0

Can you add Fn as an engraving?

Yes, I just talked to Hammer and I'm gonna add the Fn engraving now.

How long would it take to finish once processing started ?

If I did not read wrongly, we have to make full payment and then only submit order form ?

It should take about 2-3 weeks to finish a batch of production. It would already take a week to just purchase the material.

Yes you would need to make full payment first and then submit your order.

So, I have to submit payment first then full out the form?

Isn't it usually the other way around?

Yes you would need to send the payment first.

That's just my way of doing group buys here. All the group buys I have run are the same way.

Feng, is it possible to have the 1x Window in Cherry A profile?

Yes we can do that. But since the demand for Cherry A profile is not as large as B profil, I'll just keep the Cherry profile as B profile in order to make this group buy a bit easier. If you need Cherry A profile, just send me a message before ordering and I'll let Hammer make it for you.

Feng, I'm moving soon (next month) so I can't put my current shipping address. What should I put in the "Shipping Address" box to make my order? (It's a required box)

Just put "need new address" will be fine.

Yes it is possible. You can order blank ones and have them engraved later.

It's not available this time. But it might be in the next round.

We don't have this kind of printing available. I think it's either a photoshop picture or a sticker.

Yes I can offer UPS, Fedex, and DHL as long as required.

Maybe I am being nit picky, but why no price difference between 2.25 and 2.75 size keys when 1x 1.25x and 1.5 are all different?

lol good question. You only need to buy one left or right shift key, but for the modifiers, you would need more than just one. If there's no price difference between modifiers, how would the people who buy the 1x ones feel?

I can't believe there are only 7 people paid after 2 weeks... Did everyone just forget? Or did they spend their money on other things?

I guess since there's like 7 weeks left there is still plenty of time though.

Probably the same way I feel paying the same price for 2.25 and 2.75....granted I guess the savings would potentially only be $10-25 but it all adds up when buying on wallet hack :p

Tricky business all this bling. I'm working to figure out how to rationalize this purchase to both myself and my wife.

isn't the price kind of too expensive without any explainaation to keycap newbs?

What's to explain.

They're titanium.  Not titanium colored, but the actual metal.  That makes them expensive.
