A group buy is where a collection of people buy a product in bulk so they can get wholesale prices.

It's a way to experience months (years in some cases) of extremely prolonged anticipation and pondering over what to outsiders looks like a relatively small mundane buy, e.g. a bunch of keycaps.

Related German Word: Vorfreude (= anticipation)
