« on: Mon, 22 July 2013, 22:29:10 »
I've owned several mechanical keyboards, ibm model M/F, Apple Extended Keyboard I/II, Dell AT101W and several others ,but I want to try out a high quality rubber dome for kicks. Which one of these do you guys like best? Aesthetically I like the ibm more but I want know which keyboard is the better performer.

I don't know. IBM buckling rubber sleeves are supposed to be pretty nice. Many RD KB's with metal plates are nice. I really like my olivetti.

I don't have money for a topre so please keep your comments relevant to the two keyboards I mentioned or something similar in price. I'm a fan of vintage boards so it doesn't matter if its something older. Thanks guys!

From experience, very nice IBM board but the spacebar is very loud but overall I'd get the IBM if you could but the Quietkey is easier to get.

I have used both, the keyfeel is about the same, based on condition of course.  But the Trackpoint on the IBM seals the deal IMHO.

I have a dell quiet key and to be honest, I personally can't say that there is a big difference between rubber domes

edit: typing on it right now, not a big difference but there is one

They are equivalent, I like them both, but if you go for the Dell, make sure that you get the early one from Malaysia with a number like R45D and not a later one from China with a number like 1000.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.

I went with the IBM kb-8923 and I like it a lot. It definitely isn't as great as some of the best mechanical boards, but it beats some of them. I prefer it over the apple extended II and maybe the dell at101w. I love the simple/solid construction and how the board is held together only by phillips screws. Thanks for the info guys.

I recently aquired a dell quietkey at a second hand store for 2.99 and I have to say I was impressed by it.  Very nice for a rubber dome board.

I'd say go for it :)

Keytronic do a nice range of rubber domes.  Their ergo range have variably weighted keys - need more force on keys that are under your stronger fingers, and less force on keys under your weaker fingers.

Or there's the goldtouch.  Might not have the form factor you're after, but feel really good for RD (and they are very quiet).
