Not sure what this keyboard is???
« on: Sun, 11 August 2013, 00:10:52 »
Here is the ebay link:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/PRAVETZ-MECHANICAL-ATXT-BULGARIAN-KEYBOARD-1988-GOOD-CONDITION-/181186089441

I don't know what type of switch it is but the keycaps look like they are compatible with Cherry MX switches.

Who's brave enough to find out?  ;)

I think you'd call that "buckling rubber sleeve" — it's like a rubber dome, but it's hollow and sits around the slider. Various keyboards used it, as a way to offer a tactile sensation, with the Mitsumi hybrid switch being the most notable for it. (The buckling rubber sleeve tends to replace the normal coil spring.)

If you increase the brightness on the switch photo on the second auction page, you'll see that the switch is circular! Never seen that before. I've heard of Pravetz, but I've not seen the switches they used. You can see the circular shape more clearly here:

I think it's funny how I've been watching Ebay for almost two years and this is the first time I've seen these boards come up.

Interested in the keycaps but not for $75+

It's ok - he's stuck using DOS with only uppercase words and maximum 8 characters.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Here’s another Pravetz. This one looks like it might have a different kind of switch though? Looks interesting.

Very interesting, each switch is held down by a screw! The Alps Magnetic Reed switch is similar with that corner "cut" off, but the ones Haata found are not mounted with screws. They also have some markings on top of each switch, this one doesn't seem to have that.

Whatever it is, it's mine now. If it's decent I'll convert it with a Teensy.

There appear to be 2 stabilizing pins and 2 contacts per switch. Stem is closer to vintage SMK than most hall effects I've seen. It's likely a russian clone of something.

The switches individually screwed down is a cool thing to see: you get it sometimes on microswitch keyboards without plates (they are much less common though).

Very interested to see more pictures / info on this! Glad you got it bluebar

I sent Haata a message and he said that it could be a variation of a switch he has and that he's pretty sure that it's a soviet magnetic reed switch, which means it could be a clone of the Alps Magnetic Reed switch I mentioned.

Very interested to see more pictures / info on this! Glad you got it bluebar

I will definately document the disassembly, I'm quite curious what kind of switch it will be.

Here’s yet another Pravetz keyboard. This one looks to have a similar type of cross-mount, but an added rubber thingy, cylindrical caps [a bunch missing], and a different layout. [Like the original posts from upthread, but with slightly better pictures.]

Edit: oh, there are even nicer pictures at http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=48700 .. nevermind. :)
