Folks,

With the aid of the mkawa brand krytoxapullt and a lot of elbow grease, i've manage to pack a couple dozen vials of krytox GPL 206 to varying degrees. I'd like to send some of them off to test my early version of the packaging method and look for changes to optimize the package's usefulness for everyone.

Because the lube kits are very much a beta test, I will be selling them at a discount compared to the completed kits.

i also have a gigantic box full of those PS2 to USB adapters that need to be sold.

PRICING:

BETA LUBE KIT: ~20g krytox 1506 oil, ~8g krytox 206 grease, clean 5ml syringe with 27ga scabbarded luer lock needle. 12$ + shipping

RTM ID Innovations Multimode PS2 to USB keyboard adapter: 12$ + shipping

At the moment I only have the capability to ship to CONUS. Payment will be via Paypal. Shipping should be between 2 and 3 dollars to anywhere in the CONUS. If you have a terrible local USPS hub that destroys all your mail PLEASE ORDER!! I want to make sure my packaging system will stand up to USPS's worst!

-KAWA

HOW TO ORDER: send me a PM with your shipping address, paypal email address and requested order. I will send you a paypal money request. when paid, i will then pack and ship. I WILL ACCEPT DOMESTIC US ORDERS AS WELL AS ORDERS TO KOREA, CANADA, UK, AUSTRALIA, and NORTHERN EUROPE. ALL INTERNATIONAL ORDER PMs MUST INCLUDE A PHONE NUMBER FOR CUSTOMS

I'd be interested in USB adaptor or two when not CONUS only.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Here is a tip, if you want the package to be throw around then put a handle with care or fragile sticker on it. You can also put custom stickers requesting it to be thrown around and kicked. I have a feeling both packages will be equally damaged if you do that.

There is much truth to what is said here, sad to say I know people who look for the handle with care packages to use for punting practice, oh well they always loose at the poker table, karma is a ***** hehe

HAH

i wish i had some, but i'd have to stand in line for an hour to get like one or two stickers, and well, let's just say the window workers at my local PO do not. like. me. at all.

so, someone has been asking me about how to use the lube kits, and for some reason i wrote a novel in response (and this is separate from the instructions i wrote and am including with every order.

Quote
So if I'm understanding correctly, I want to use a mixture of oil and grease on the sliders of the switch and the little feet things, and just oil on the spring and stem.

Is there any specific ratio I should be going by for the mixture?
the irony here is that i don't personally lube switches so i have no idea what people actually do with this lube. i just know they want it and they've had to do weird shady things to get it in the past. i'm providing a way to put a single drop of lube OR lube/grease mix anywhere you want. i'm not actually sure if this is how people use the krytox, it's how i personally use krytox, but i tend to lube machine parts, joints and other bushings and bearings with it.

i would just go to the lube thread and ask people how they do it. i know some people (i was talking with nubbinator in particular) like to use a fine paintbrush and just get a sheen, and they use the grease/oil mixture everywhere. however, some people like to do other stuff. i know limmy also uses a heavier mineral oil, but i don't recommend mixing krytox with a mineral oil. krytox doesn't like petro oils, and krytox lasts much much longer than petro oils. just replace the petro oil with a more viscous krytox mix.

as far as ratio is concerned, i've done some testing with the specific combo i have on hand and you can go pretty high, as high as 3:1 oil to grease and still get something that's quite viscous at room temperature. however, the dupont chemist felt that somewhere between 1.3:1 and 2:1 was about right and you wouldn't get much better performance above that ratio; my feeling is that he is probably right. you want the oil to seem a bit heavier and more viscous. viscosity is actually separate from lubridicity. oddly, and especially with these fluoropolymers, you can have a viscous oil that significantly reduces the coefficient of friction. it's kind of the beauty of PFPE and PTFE, actually. you can have this viscous oil that stays in one place, but has an extremely low coefficient of friction.

to see an example of this in a less exotic situation, think of PTFE mouse feet. they are quite slippery, right? however, they're completely solid. although we normally think of coefficient of friction as being proportional to viscosity, that's really only true for certain types of oils, specifically petro-based oils and silicone-based oils. it's not true of fluoropolymers.

the secret to fluorinated materials is that they just don't like other substances. they don't mix with them, they don't get along with them. they're just kind of like

the reason why is very basic chemistry. fluorine is an incredibly reactive halogen, but because it's so reactive, once it forms a stable bond with something, it becomes exceedingly inert. so PTFE and PFPE, which are the class of polymers that krytox belongs to, are all fluorine capped. their polymer compounds are these long strings of organic compounds with really nice properties that we want, and then to protect the polymer stringest, fluorine is placed in a highly stable bond as a cap on every endpoint. to make a macroscopic biological analogy, these polymers are kind of like micro-organisms that form hardened cell membranes and hibernate to hide and survive over long periods of time; tuberculosis does this, as do many other very highly drug resistant bacteria.

that said, there are a lot of friction points in a cherry switch (same with an alps switch, buckling spring, etc.). some of those friction points make the switch more pleasant to type on -- like the distinct tactile bump on a factory green. some of those friction points make the switch less pleasant to type on -- like the scratchy sliding action of a factory cherry black. so it really depends on your preferences. where do you want there to be less friction? _those_ are the points that you want to put a drop or a sheen or what have you of lube on.

once you get into it and realize how amazing this stuff is, you'll find that there's a ton of stuff that can benefit from krytox as well. i lubricate box joints on hand tools with it (feels... so... good..), nearly anything with a bushing or bearing on it, and so on...

just remember that the grease has a 260C hard limit at which the PTFE matrix melts (although the oil in the 206 may start off-gassing before then, it is generally good up to 200C), so it's also definitely good for some automotive applcations, small machines (like 3d printers :D), and all kinds of other junk. heck, if you have a particularly noisy door...

so anyway, what you want to remember is that what i'm doing here is trying to get literally the highest end bleeding edge lubricant to everyone as a nice reasonable price. using it is really up to you. it's been a lot of work to get to this point, but i have no doubt that you guys can come up with cool and effective ways to use it.

in fact, here's one: you now how some caps are tighter than others on cherry cruciforms? have a particularly tight cap? a single drop of oil is probably enough to clear that up without contaminating every other part of the cap.

You can print your own stickers using envelope or shipping labels.

Since it seems like you like writing, how much Krytox 1506 can I drink before getting diarrhea, extreme diarrhea and before dying?

Imagine making a waterpark with Krytox, you would see people slipping everywhere! A slide with Krytox would be fun though. :))

a truck dispatch office just called me :|

according to the msds: http://msds.dupont.com/msds/pdfs/EN/PEN_09004a35804e560f.pdf

they tried this with a rat, and you'd have to eat more than 110% of your body weight to die from eating GPL 20x greases. the rat probably died from its stomach exploding and not from exposure to the polymer.

either that or the rat just stopped eating and they couldn't make the rat suffer any ill effects so they just reported that it would have to be more than 110% of your body weight.

I'd be happy to take one of the kits, but I don't have a unique situation at all.  Just a regular small town post office that takes great care of things, delivered to a house with no issues.  But if you need to unload some of the packs I'd take one.   :)

NOTE: prices will DEFINITELY be going up after this beta test. If you want the maximum amount of raw krytoxican material for the least cost, now is the time to get a kit. I will be vending more niceties later, but costs are going to have to go up to compensate.

Got my lube kit today.  Everything arrived safely, at least I think.  I have not fully unwrapped the lube yet since I saw small amounts of lube on the wrapping at I got further down (and I don't have any gloves).  But I'm going to attest that to either a really really small leak, or the fact that you probably have lube everywhere in your house.  The syringe is safe as well.  I can take pics if needed, but trying to eat atm :D.

YYEESSSSSssssssssss.......

umm, yes, the vials are slippery because i literally have krytox everywhere in my apartment, and myself. basically 24/7. if it's not clear that a significantly amount got out of the vial (the oil vial would be like half empty most likely), it was probably either a slight pressure issue or just the grease that was on all the grease vials migrating with heat cycles in hot trucks. i have one report of a straight up smashed oil vial, but that was with those damned 3x4 envelopes that i won't be using ever again. for anything.

Mwaka what is the procedure for washing this stuff off?

There was actually a part of the note that was included that states:
There are exactly seven solvents that dissolve krytox products and:  six of them cause cancer, and the last one is the chemical equivalent of an anti-krytox, except it costs three times as much and is nearly impossible to purchase.  Also, it may cause cancer.  You have been warned.

i buy the big packs of microfiber cloths from costco and wipe everything down. when a towel is saturated with krytox, i rinse it out and dry. after enough cycles of this, the towels become pretty useless and have to be tossed.. the costco microfibers are about 0.4USD each, so it ends up working out. all future shipments will come with at least one pair of disposable gloves (the note actually states that every pack comes with a pair of gloves, but i doofed and forgot the gloves for the first 10 shipments or so.

there are 5 or 6 beta kits left. after this, prices go up, so if you want krytox in the US, now is a pretty good time. more niceties will come in later packs, but they will have to cost more.

there will be super cute heart stickers though. hat tip to jocelyn for that one.

note that the problem with trying to dissolve krytox polymers is that you release flourine. flourine unbonded is an extremely nasty, corrosive substance. hence, badness. the least toxic solvent for krytox is actually another PFPE that is designed to attract the PFPE base in krytox products and bond to them, and then there's some chemical magic that I don't understand. However, even this product has a max exposure of 750 PPM; ie, it is toxic.

krytox itself is completely, wildly non-toxic. so the best cleanup procedure is probably some rags and time. yes, eventually everything you own will have a trace amount of krytox on it, but i've been living in trace amounts of krytox all week/end and it's not so bad -- everything is just slightly less frictiony. also, it's odorless and tasteless. so basically, i'm unable to tell via the usual methods that there is krytox everywhere. i just know because there has to be.

one should also note that the reason i have krytox everywhere is because i did a horrible job trying to pack the beta kits and i have 20-30lbs of it in my living room. the few grams in each kit won't get nearly as far, frankly.

Unless they are stuck somewhere, then it might come in handy.

Got mine today, mine was pretty much same as Cody's. vial's were closed but a little oily.

Didn't get around to messing with the lube today though, my ErgoDox also came in and I spent literally 6 or 7 hours putting it together. But it's done, and works. :thumb:

I'm still debating if I want to relube mine.  I just used the cheap teflon stuff last time but that was only a couple weeks ago.  I'd hate to have to desolder all the switches and open them again, but at least I have a switch tool this time.

1) they're nitrile gloves, so safe if you have a latex allergy!

2) at some point the geekhackers storefront will have all this documentation. this was something i wrote up in the rush to get the beta kits out. i wanted to personally thank everyone who was willing to try out my first effort at this personally, and that's why you always leave a note.

... and i think we're all out of beta kits now! thanks for your orders everyone!! :)

on wednesday i will retrieve the last of the parts for the pre-RTM kits (i think there's one more thing i want to include in the final final-ish kits -- a larger diameter needle for suction-filling with the plunger... but i'm still trying to decide if it will actually help or just drive up the cost of the kits for no good reason. 5ccs just doesn't give you that much vacuum unfortunately..).

matt3o has been hard at work on the storefront and i'm hoping at least a beta version will go up by next week so that kits can be ordered properly. i also have dyesubbed spacebars from imsto coming in at some point that i know a number of you have been waiting patiently for, and something something i can't remember).

ok anyway, if you've contacted me with an order in the last couple days, i will get back to you by wednesday pacific time at the latest.

yes!

i have 16 pre-RTM kits packed. these are the same as the beta kits with a few exceptions: ALL of them contain gloves. i have included a swizzle stick for mixing and moving around the grease (beta+ kits also have this). finally, the grease vials have a much wider mouth which makes them quite a bit easier to work with. Price on these is 16$ USD. Same shipping restrictions as before. I will not ship into china or SE asia, as they still come with hypodermic needles, and i don't want anyone to get put in jail (yeeps!)

Rowdy received three PS/2 to USB adaptors, and in the spirit of transparency, Rowdy did not receive any latex gloves, although there was a nice instruction leaflet included that said something about wearing the gloves while using the rest of the package.  Rowdy was a bit worried to plug a PS/2 keyboard in without the gloves.

so i have a huge number of kits of various revisions (tiny changes in packaging basically) available for sale. the website isn't up because matt3o found some work (yay!), and i have a massive world-smashing deadline, but if you PM me your order to anywhere except muslim and SE asian countries, I will send you your goods. again, our stock is krytox lube packs (~8g GPL 206 grease and ~18g 1506 VPF oil) and ID innovations multimode (serial to usb and ps2 to usb) usb adapters. they don't use the familiar FTDI chipset, but thank gives them the ability to switch between serial and ps2 mode. note that in ps2 mode, they're made to interface with ps2 keyboards only. if you have a particularly weird ps2 keyboard, or a device that you want to act like a ps2 keyboard, there's a third firmware that emulates a HID keyboard but i believe takes its input as txrx.

i should note that because of this, they're actually really cool little hacker toys and not just ps2 to usb adapters. that said, my primary reason for stocking them is that they work extremely well with very old model Ms. in terms of providing power over the ps2 connector and reconnecting if your M controller is flakey, they are absolutely tops.

ok seriously folks, there is no solvent for krytox that's easily available and non-toxic. i've gotten a lot of questions about how to get krytox off of stuff. the short answer is this: go to some fluffy microfiber cloths. my favorite are the costco yellow ones. they're really cheap, and you can use them for EVERYTHING then toss them when they get gross. step 2! wipe surface aggressively with a fresh cloth. the wicking action of the microfiber absorbs the vast majority of either the grease or the oil (both of them are mostly oil. the stuff that's not oil is a teflon matrix and large and solid; it will just by abraded away by the polyester fibers). that's it! there might be stains that are trace amounts of oil after you do this. if they bother you (you should barely be able to feel them), just take another surface of the cloth or another cloth and wipe vigorously. again, that is it. polyester is WAY harder than anything in the lubricant and the lubricant polymers are smaller than the micro bit of the microfibers, and they even like the polyester! they're good buddies so make them happy :D

however, DO NOT THROW SOLVENTS AT KRYTOX. i don't care what it is. if it's a ketone, acid, alcohol, whatever, it won't do a damn thing to the krytox except make it angry* and probably dissolve the thing that the krytox is sitting on. I REPEAT: DO NOT USE SOLVENTS WITH KRYTOX. you will damage things. krytox cannot damage things. only solvents can damage things.

*just kidding, krytox never gets angry. that's why i got heart stickers to label it! krytox loves you!!!

ps, the slick looking stain is most likely just some oil getting into a porous material. there is none left at the surface. it's just that the material you put it on had very very tiny holes in it, holes that were small enough for the krytox polymers to cozy in to. those polymers are just going to sit there being inert until the end of time or until you shave off enough of the porous material. if you get really fine microfiber that also fits into the same holes, it will lift away the krytox, but seriously, don't worry about it. KRYTOX DOES NOT REACT WITH ANYTHING IT CANNOT DAMAGE ANYTHING. it just kind of sits there. maybe it plays golf sometimes. i don't know. it does its own thing.

for people that do not know this....

acetone eats keycaps. do not use it ever to clean them.
use denture cleaner to clean them if you must.

it won't touch krytox though.

You are a guinea pig?  I thought you were a bunny! ;)
