Buy them one... my gf likes typing on my keyboards, so I'm looking to get her a nice little brown TKL.

When they whine about you keyboards, you gather all their clothes, shoes, makeup and so on and start counting how much they are worth. If they still whine, burn it  :p

She could not care less. I do not care that she does not care. Everyone is happy. I see no incompatibility really. Though she did think they were too loud, so I had to install o-rings, avoid blues and put my keyboard on a cloth pad to reduce the sound that comes from it. Now , she is perfectly happy.

Oh, and I had to take off the blank keycaps because it was annoying to use my PC for her.

My bf is always asking me if that's "the last one" when a new keyboard shows up on my desk. I just point out his (overpriced) figures and paintings. WHICH YOU CAN'T EVEN USE.

At least I forced him to learn to touch-type.

Edit: Oh right, suggestions. Buy them something expensive(-ish).

I bought my gf a QFR with blues. She loves it and now understands when I told her that spending anything more than the average cost if a rubber dome for a keyboard is more than justified. In addition, she also likes the possibility of customization.

Moreover, to better understand the hobby, I brought her to the Chicago meet-up and KeyCon. She got to try out all the cool boards other users bought. She agrees that, for a device your hands touch countless hours a week, the experience should be enjoyable and is worth the cost.

I'll be buying her the red-on-white Doubleshot PBT from feng's group buy to complete her keyboard.

tl;dr = buy him/her a mechanical keyboard and bring him/her to meet-ups

Be tolerant and understanding of her hobbies, and try to express interest when she shows you her latest acquisition, as you would expect her to show interest in your latest keyboard or keycap set.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

A lot of this comes down to simple communication.  Communication can solve lots of things.

My gf doesn't care but she pretends to be interested when I shoe her stuff I get. That's all I can really ask for. Just tell her why you like it and if she loves you she'll understand. Everyone has hobbies. My girlfriend justifies my spending by saying that at least I'm not into a more expensive hobby like cars.

So I guess just have a conversation. Like others have said.

yeah, honestly talking with her would be the best. Have her try out some of your favorites, see if you can't get her equally addicted hahaha, if not, just get her a nice keyboard at least. Anyone who uses a computer at all would appreciate that >.<

I try to spend more time with my wife and family than I do on my hobby.

But I have to hide my purchases. She wouldn't understand. And I'm a compulsive spender.

i'll pipe in on this one since i am willing to bet i am one of the older members here

find out what your wife's/gf's hobby is and encourage, take interest in it, surprise her with a couple of things she covets...........which will minimize your hobby (keyboards) to her

budget your spending................. other than maybe clacks everything comes up FS sooner or later. if you miss a GB just wait for someone to put it up in the "classifieds." it is hard i know to discipline oneself when you see something come up, but to manage that craving you will find out in the big picture you can still get what you want by spreading it out a little longer. give and take......you gotta meet'em halfway and don't minimize what you have already bought, accumulated over something you do not have or you think you have to have

i am willing to bet unless you are just getting started that most of us have "already" some pretty cool stuff

as i read some of the others said...........never let ur hobby, whether it be keyboards or whatever supersede your wife or girl friend, family

just slowwwwww down on the i gotta have it now, spending and watch what happens :thumb:

of course they will be upset if you put something before them and they should be and you would too

I try to spend more time with my wife and family than I do on my hobby.

But I have to hide my purchases. She wouldn't understand. And I'm a compulsive spender.

So, get yourself a PO box. It can save your butt. :P

Haha.  Ya, or ship to your office.  :)

"Honey, I work in front of a computer for 10 hours a day.  Think of it as an investment in my daily happiness."  :)

In all honesty, the other people in this thread have good advice.  My wife would not get the same enjoyment from a keyboard that I do, but she understands the quality of life improvement for me because of my career.  The tablet I bought her gets used every day and she enjoys it.  Its all about balance and not acting as hastily as we sometimes want to.   :thumb:

The alert spouse would eventually notice all teh extra boxes and toys in your home office anyway.

At first my girlfriend couldn't understand why I was so into keyboards. But then I bought her a FILCO with red switches, which she loves and is using at work, and when she complained of it being noisy (she bottoms out all the time), I got her some O-rings and we installed them together (she loved taking off the caps and putting the rings in, she said it was therapeutic).

Now she's in London, I miss her like hell, but she uses the keyboard we got and modded together :)

I keep offering to buy my other half a keyboard, and she keeps refusing.

The gender choice of the topic is interesting. Is it an assumption that there are no women here? Or is it that boyfriends are never bothered by noisy keyboards?

Actually the implicit assumption that girlfriends and (one imagines) wives are almost automatically going to hate noisy/expensive keyboards is concerning in itself.

According to GH stats:

Total Members: 26195
Male to Female Ratio: 28.3:1

So there must be 925 female persons here somewhere.

This is the Internet. Women are men. Kids are [name three-letter-organization of your choice] agents.

Oh yeah... and you're intolerant to lesbians!

I really dislike the whole de-genderization of the human race that's going on these days. Men are men, and women are women. This is a predominantly male-oriented community here in GH, and we act like it. It's in no way meant to disparage the women that are here, but we assume that the majority of people who read this are going to be men, because that's how it is.

my personal situation is the "ex."  I guess the ex loved to buy craptons of super famicom / sega megadrive games and has seen an addiction - albeit a different one.

I just need to convince her the end is in the sight :D
