What do these symbols on my keyboard mean?
« on: Sat, 19 October 2013, 18:57:13 »
I recently bought a Noppoo Choc Mini. I do not recognize the symbols below the F10, F11 and F12. Does anybody know what they mean?

PS: The arrows on F9 are for swapping Capslock and Control. {F10, F11} are not volume keys! The actual volume keys are Fn+Q and Fn+W (not shown in the picture). So these must be something else.

I'm guessing volume up, volume down and mute/unmute

i believe F10 and F11 are debounce. i have no clue what the F12 is, iv only ever seen it say insert. maybe its the same thing they just use a symbol for it now.

edit: here is a quote from another thread to explain what debounce is, and a link to the thread I got it from.
Debounce is how much the keyboard needs to aggregate signals into a single "press" that is sent to the computer.

Ah thanks, the post you linked to is great! I'm convinced that they are debouncing keys

Regarding F12, they seem to register some random keys simultaneously from i,j,k,l,m,n.
For example, pressing 'Q' gives 'km', pressing 'W' gives 'jlm', etc. Wonder what's the point of this?

Debouncing interval? ... That is really fine-tuning.

I'd say F12 is launching your audio program, but that's only because that's the symbol that I see on the little page icon in windows when Winamp is set as my default.

This post suggests something else.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
