Dream car
« on: Tue, 05 November 2013, 05:47:41 »
Here it is.  If you could build any project car, what would it be?  No sci-fi stuff.  I mean actual cars that have been made.

I would have to say mine would be a choice between two

Either a mid 1980's full size GM 2 door with a monster diesel with quad sequential turbos, and a two stage propane injection (propane is to diesel that NOS is to gas engines).

Or a mid 1980's GM full size pickup or full size blazer in 2wd set down to the ground with a twin remote mount turbo setup, and at least a 6 way power full bench seat with the interior done in denim.

My bad slightly misread the topic. If I was to build a car from scratch I'd like to get a Cateram as they look like great fun to race or cane around a track.

Build it myself? I think not. I haven't the time nor the greasmonkey know how to do a thing like that. My dream car would have to be something unobtainable in my current and likely lifetime financial standing, and something I could drive everyday practically. Aston Martin V12 Vantage I choose you!

Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale replica.

680kg, 2litre short stroke fuel injected twin spark V8 with 10,000rpm redline, 6 speed gearbox, magnesium wheels, disc brakes, butterfly doors. Not bad for 1967!

And it's stunningly beautiful.

Lotus / Caterham 7.  Morgan 4/4.  Possibly a Lotus Elite or Elan +2, but I'd need someone to drive behind me with a trailer just in case.

2nd choice is a classic Mini with supercharger and few other choice aftermarket bits (custom cam, 1.5 ratio rockers, duplex cam chain, flowed head, disc brake kit, etc..) for sheer unadulterated fun factor!

Even a stock classic Mini is fun to drive. Just for added geekness, here's a fun fact: The Mini engine and gearbox design / layout (vertical stack) inspired the Lamborghini Miura engine layout which was crucial to the design. It also paved the way for all future front-wheel drive hatchbacks.

Nice to know.  Here is another tidbit for ya.  In 1987 the fastest US made car was actually a buick with the GNX packaged Gran National featuring a single turbo V-6. Quote form wikipedia here: Buick underrated the GNX at 245 hp (183 kW) and a very substantial 360 lb·ft (488 N·m) of torque.

My dream car is more of an overall concept rather than a specific example.

Full-size sedan, two doors, sharp lines, horizontal 3-bulb tail lights, V8, manual transmission, steep rear end gearing with limited slip, black with red pinstripes and chrome/bright aluminum trim.

Bumping with my newest acquisition!

Oooh, yeah!

Friend of mine had an 850 mini that had been bored out to 1450.  The motor lasted less than 500 miles before melting the paper-thin bit of cylinder wall left between its big fat pistons, but it was fun while it lasted; it would spin the wheels in all four gears, no matter what speed you were doing already, if you floored it.

1500 Spitfires are a lot of fun, too.  And you can sit on the front wheels when you're working on the engine, which is a bonus.  Actually, thinking about it, a Mk1 GT6 is another one for the wishlist..

Speaking of thin cylinder walls.  My grandfather was in the Army back in WWII.  When he got transfered back stateside before exiting the service they had him driving a snow plow on a military base.  The motor was a V-8 that had the cylinder walls removed between some cylinders to make it a V-4 with oval pistons and a custom crankshaft, cam shaft, and distributor.  From what he was telling me it would do 55 mph through 6 feet of snow with a V plow blade on the front.

highland cows.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

What about this for getting attention?

"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

How dare you try and add geekness to any of that without a single mention of the word "transverse"! HOW DARE you sir!

Any who...

My two dream cars (outside of personal design?) have already been mentioned in this thread.
1) Classic mini
2) Caterham

In my opinion they are both incredible to drive. And after driving countless minis I feel part of my soul is missing without one. From the Morris mini minor, Moke, Riley Elf, Wolseley Hornet, Clubman, Traveler, Pickup, to one of the very last classic Mini Coopers to roll off the production line. Wobbly magic wand to remote; A-series to Vtec; 13s to 10s; moustache to square nose, make no mistake I love them damn little cars.  I don't recall ever driving a mini Marcos though.

I do have a huge list of dream cars, however, those top two feel a bit more special and deserve top honors.

You need to come down to Costa Mesa.  You'd die if I showed you this one car place near me.  They have at least a dozen restored classic minis, including some in sexy sexy British racing green with a white stripe and white top, and all sorts of crazy classic minis, including the pickup, and some modded classic minis.  I get a huge grin every time I go by there.

Dope!
I bet it's Graham Reid's place (Heritage Garage). We were in the same club years ago. I've driven a few of his minis over the years. Pretty cool stuff, lucky you. I don't see that many classic minis now unfortunately. I used to easily see one a week when I was out and about.

That would be the place.  And just a few doors down is a Lotus showroom/dealership.  I pass by it on my way to Trader Joe's.  It really is an awesome place.

And that's awesome to have had the chance to drive some of his Minis.  That's one of those cars that I've always wanted to drive and would love to own one day.  It's just a ridiculous and awesome little piece of automotive history.
