Bezerk, you were completely relevant with every sugestion. What I meant was the the mj2 wasnt shouted down in general in the thread.. Your advise to be cautious with such fragile tech is paramount.. The kids are 2 & 5yo. Both boys are pretty careful but if the potential hazard is there, murphy's law tends to follow.   One plus is that it would sit on a roll out kb shelf which might make it a bit safer.. I REALLY want a mechanical kb. Will just have to be careful.. Plug in the membrane when im done and just use the mj2 @ night which is usually the case for me. Those tbick pbt caps are a bit rare.. I think GH has something to do with that  :p

Great decision for the thread starter. I also use Filco brown at work and it's quite quiet and easy to type on.

Haha sorry if my wording was confused. I am the dad lol.. I got a few spare cheap mice.. I type softly and play rpg games now n then. The board has to be a full 104 as my partner needs the numpad

I think a relatively cheap quiet rubber dome is going to be quieter than a modded cherry with o-rings because the noise that the mechanical makes isn't just on the downstroke but on the rebound as well when you've got the slider hitting the keycap. And a criticism of the o-ring mod is the bouncy feeling at the end of the downstroke which is reminiscent of rubber domes which most users are trying to get away from.

Hear the sounds from the o-ring mod with different switches.

If the father is not a fan of mech keyboards, I think a good rubber dome like Logitech is suitable for him.

If he is fond of mech keyboards, a Realforce silent will be a good choice.

nono, absolutely not for fathers of 2 and 5 year old boys, unless the father happens to be pretty rich.

as I said earlier, kids have magical ways of demolishing your stuff. And nordlad seems to agree, with his comment on Murphy's Law.

Everything that can break, WILL break, and anything not expected to break, is likely to break anyway.

I also have a friend whose infant daughter destroyed his keyboard by vomiting on it while she was happily sitting on his lap. When kids puke, they rarely show signs of distress. Nordlad won't know until too late.

If the father is not a fan of mech keyboards, I think a good rubber dome like Logitech is suitable for him.

If he is fond of mech keyboards, a Realforce silent will be a good choice.
Most of the modding can be done on your own once you break through the psychological barriers.

I know it took ages but here it is!

Colourful keycaps. All it needs now are some Cherry MX RGB switches.  :o

Oh well Filco is not a bad choice at any given rate. Now you just sort of have to make is sort of kid-proof lol.

Kid-proof heh, especially with those keycaps!

My daughter would kill, or at least seriously maim, for keycaps like that.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

I beg to differ, silenced Topres and modded browns can both be very quiet while retaining tactility:

I got my dad a Realforce Silent for the holidays and he absolutely loves it. I wanted to ease his lifelong transition from rubber domes :P

Seriously, it's a great board and he's a writer. More than I wanted to spend, but his tool of trade is his keyboard. I kept telling him with his ****ty Dell board it's like a soldier going to battle with a water pistol, or an F1 driver racing in a Passat, so eventually I convinced him to let me upgrade his board and he says the difference is night and day.

Getting a rainbow Keycool from China would be a cheaper, singular option

No absolutely not!

Kids love color on keyboards. If you don't want them to touch your keyboard, get a boring and ugly black on black. It really works. LEDs are the worst for repelling kids. They will attack any Ducky with that touch lighting (or whatever you call it- touch and it lights up) function. And they will try to smack the keyboard to get more lights lighted up.
