Backlit TKL with Costar Stabilizers?
« on: Tue, 19 November 2013, 09:19:28 »
Does it exist outside of custom?

Most of the customs I've seen use Cherry stabilizers. Is there a reason you have to have Costar stabilizers?

you should post questions like this in Simple Questions, Simple Answers in the future..

and yes, the wasd code. there may be more too, i just can't think of any off the top of my head.

and cpt is right, i don't believe there is a single korean custom that supports costar stabilisers. they all use pcb mounted cherry stabilisers.

I didn't even know that thread existed! I'll try that from now on.

I've never even used cherry stabilizers. Just from what I've read on this forum costar are much better, right?

It's all opinion really, I hate costar personally, mainly because of the inserts. The cherry stabilizers on my ducky feel great.

Not at all. I do personally prefer costar stabilisers to STOCK cherry stabilisers. However, a simple mod makes cherry stabilisers feel MUCH better. I think modded cherry stabilisers feel far nicer than costar.

See the mod here, you just need to clip off part of the stem of the stabiliser. : http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=34759.0

The WASD code looks pretty amazing. Can you tell me what the difference between the CODE and the standard WASD are besides the backlight? I'm always trying to figure out the differences between certain keyboards. Before buying my filco I actually really wanted the WASD barebones (since I was replacing keycaps anyway) but it, as well as the standard wasd TKL in blue / brown, were out of stock. The code is also out of stock for the next 4-6 months, according to the site. I actually didn't think I'd even be able to see a backlight behind my thick PBT caps, but it actually looks really nice on my blackwidow. The caps block out all light, but you can see a nice glimmer between them.

As far as stabilizers go, for whatever reason this forum has made me scared of the cherrys. Otherwise, I would have bought a ducky 3 TKL two weeks ago. I understand its a matter of preference for some people, but for whatever reason it seemed like the majority of prominent members (I could be wrong) preferred costar and praised Filco / Coolermaster because of it. I have a friend who has a ducky and I was planning on checking out his cherry stabilizers, but when I decided I wanted thick pbt caps I assumed backlighting would be irrelevant and I ordered the Filco.

Stock cherries feel kinda mushy. Costars feel more crisp. The mod I posted makes cherries feel crisp.

The differences between code and normal wasd as far as I can tell are:
-LEDs
-LED ready keycaps
-MX Clears

probably some other small differences too..

Pretty sure the shine 3's have clipped cherry stabilizers stock.

Yea the impression I get from reading even that mod forum is that costar are just "safer" and that the cherrys feel "mushy". I'm not sure what mushy means there, but I've seen it a lot. I also already had costar on my current board and when buying a new board I wanted to make sure I'd like it. Costar just seemed safe. I'll try my friend's ducky and see how it is.

Clipping those cherry stabilizers won't hurt the PCB? People question that in the thread linked.

Ducky Shine 3 and all the new Zeros all have their improved Cherry stabilizers, which according to review are just as crisp as Costar. They're not really any better, it's just preference. Also, Coolermaster doesn't use Costar stabilizers, despite having their boards built by them, they use Cherry.

The Cherry hate from a few concentrated people is honestly ridiculous.

Because it is backlit, it is one of the few coolermaster boards that does, if not the only one.

I wish I had known that about the shine 3 TKL. I may have bought that instead of the filco. I'm sure the filco will be great though.

Not all Cherry stabilizers suck (but some really do), as far as I know it seems Ducky does some really nice cherry stabs on the backlit keyboards such as Shine III.

Another keyboard that has Cherry stabs and those are actually VERY nice is the Tt eSports Meka G-Unit, though I wouldn't recommend that keyboard to anyone due to another reasons (internal build, awful keycaps, way too damn big).

Anyways, all backlit CM Storm keyboards use Cherry stabs and all non-backlit use Costar stabilizers. The CM Storm Trigger paticurarly uses some of the worst Cherry stabs I've ever seen and even Carter admits those stabs are bad.
