Questions about Cherry g80-3800/3850
« on: Sat, 23 November 2013, 06:32:44 »
I've read the faq and searched for old thread about the subject and I've got a few more questions.
I'm interested in the 3800 model because its cheap and has low profile keys. The light weight is alright as long as the whole thing is reliable.

Does the 3800 have the same detachable micro usb cable like the 3850? Those things look really flimsy sticking out at the end like the Rosewill 9000 which had a problem due to that faulty design. Any problems in that area?

Are the keycaps for 3800/3850 interchangeable with other cherrys? I read one review which said that only the capslock had a non-standard stem placement which isn't too bad. And if I needed replacements of those low profile 3800/3850 keycaps, where can I get those?

Good question. The Keyboard Company ignored the G80-3800, so no review, no product details.

I can't find any indication that the cable was removable in the G80-3800. I did just update the DT wiki with the switch mount for each, as one major difference is that the 3850 is plate mounted.

I'm still idly considering buying one; I'd be more tempted if I could get one with clears or, even better, greens.

3 major flaws of Cherry G3800.

1. The board had no anti slip mat under it, make it (super) easy to slide around.
2. Flat keycaps are completely not comfortable to type on (the edgy feel and small surface area), worsen by the non-standard Caps Lock making it completely incompatible to 95% of aftermart keycaps out there.
3. Under the bottom left part (Ctrl key) there actually a little hollow, resulting a strange and hollow sound when you pressed on the left Ctrl.

I guess the 1st and 3rd problem are somehow solved a little in G3850, but the 2nd point itself is more than enough to be a deal breaker.

Except where they're not. Incompatibilities include where the stem is on caps lock, and the width of the modifier keys, which changed between earlier and later G80-3000 keyboards. I seem to recall reading that there are one or two new incompatibilities introduced with the MX BOARD 2 and 3, not counting the keycap profile.

As for keycap surface area, has anyone measured this? Surface width should be between 12–13 mm on a normal keyboard.

I looked at more pics again and saw it the cable had a plug which means its most probably not detachable.
The deal breaker was that it wasn't 6kro but 2-3kro like the g80-3000.

Both G80-38*0 models are 6KRO USB, NKRO PS/2. Personally I would avoid the 3800 and go for the 3850 as it has much better construction. There are some decent KC104 sets that can replace the low profile keys. 3800 have fixed cable, 3850 is detachable with mini B.

No the 3800 is 2kro because there aren't any diodes on every switch in the pcb. Some review articles got it wrong.

I guess 3800 technically is 2KRO, but it has very good anti-ghosting which allow many 4+ key combination unlike most 2KRO G80.

Dear IvanIvanovich,

Where can you buy the latest G80-3850 motherboard?  Please provide a link to someone who will sell to Convict Town easily, that would be greatly appreciated  ;) .

I thought he mean like general keys . Like the caps of a filco will fit a quickfire rapid. Like cherry ML caps wont fit a MX board
