In our testing, if you're only using one thumb for the Spacebar, then 2.5x is enough, starting at the same position as the home-row key for your index finger.

I used to have a Palm m505 (but now it is dead).The latter photo... One would look like they were some sort of a cyborg back in those days with wearable technology like that.
