Hall keypad tour
« on: Sun, 08 December 2013, 02:41:06 »
Not enough people have tried hall switches. These things are awesome. I'd like to put one of my pads on tour if enough people want to try them. Yep, there's enough interest, the tour's gonna happen.

Rules-
It's my pad and I'd like for it to make it to everyone and back to me so I get to pick if you're in or not. No strict post count or anything, just if you have overall good rep it's fine.

Spend some time (1 week or less) with the pad and then send it off to the next guy on the list with however I decide to ship it after I visit the post office and figure out how to go about that.

If you're not US based you have to pay shipping both to you and to the next guy.

Post an impression of some sort. I don't need a huge review, even "i liked it" or "it sucked" is fine by me.

Here's some pics of the pad-

The only problem: If I like them, where will I get a board with hall effect switches?

I'm in if you'll have me, sir.

Some old ones turn up on ebay from time to time. Though there would be a bit of work to make it work over usb.

These are the "pcb mounted" hall effect switches that microswitch made from 1970 until 1983 or so. There's some evidence they may have made them as late as 1993.

From whet I remember, based on the date codes, this is one of the most recent keypads using this style of switch that is known to exist.

The round sliders tend to bind if hit off axis, especially on heavily used examples. These appear to be in excellent shape, though.

Yeah, from the original thread-
So the smaller label 7846, looks to be 1978, week 46. For these switches is pretty late (I have a keyboard from 1970, with components from 1969).

They really do seem to be in good shape overall. Switches are still very smooth and binding isn't an issue. I can't get them to bind even when actively trying. Only noticeable damage is some scratches on some of the keycaps, which have to be some of the best quality caps I've seen on anything.

I am intrigued. Always fun to try switches, even if I will probably never have a keyboard with them or likely even want one.

If you're in the tour make sure to PM me your address so I can get the tour rolling once everything's ready to go.

Is it safe to assume that this won't be going out and passed around before mid-January?

I should hopefully ship to the first person within a week or two depending on a couple things. If you need to hold off to a certain time I can arrange you to be put later in the tour though.

I'll just be at different addresses depending on when it gets to me.  I'd like to keep my spot, I'll just have to give you my address when the time comes closer.
