Daskeyboard Model S Ultimate 102 key cap replacement
« on: Sun, 08 December 2013, 20:03:46 »
Hi! I found this site after searching for proper keycap replacements for my daskeyboard model s (After a failed attempt of spray painting it white).

Can anyone suggest replacement keycaps (104 of them) that I could buy and would work on my daskeyboard?

I read this thread, http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=34494.msg637173#msg637173, but I don't want to pay for a rainbow colored keyboard.

I was considering buying this, http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,cherrymxkeys&pid=dmx_us104_grn_np, but then I looked at their spacebar, http://elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,cherrymxkeys&pid=sb_u2, and noticed the underside does not have any of the plastic loops that hook onto the metal support bar that's on the keyboard. I don't think it would be compatible without the support bar on the daskeyboard.

Can anyone suggest a few products? I'll consider products above $20, but I don't feel it justified to spend more than $20. I'm open to any color, and prefer blank keys over any printed/etched keys.

Any 104 keycap set will work.

Those inserts are for costars you can just swap them with the new caps.

The white plastic bits are replaceable.

But one thing that depends... does the bottom row of your Das have 1x sized windows keys? That can be a problem with custom sets

Just say NO to ABS keycaps

I don't know if costar is an attribute or a company, but if I'm not allowed to link to the product page of my keyboard, then a mod can remove it. This is the link: http://www.daskeyboard.com/product/model-s-ultimate/

If I understood you correctly, I'll be able to plug in the spacebar (that I linked) onto my daskeyboard? My keyboard has one switch per key. The original daskeyboard spacebar has 1 hole for the switch to go into, and 2 plastic hinges/loops that the metal support bar on the keyboard hooks/latches onto.

The linked product has a spacebar with 4 holes, not 1. 3 of those holes will be empty as I only use the center hole. The support bars won't be compatible, right? Will that make the spacebar wobbly?

The little white things (or sometimes black or some other color), are not part of keycap. They come out. Take the ones out of the keys you have now and put them in new keycap. Costar type stabilizer (support bar), it just one type common stabilizer that MX keyboards have, the other being Cherry type. All MX keycap are same for the most part, though some different sizes and slightly different stabilizer spacing do exist on some keyboards. Generally those things are not something you will find on aftermarket keycap set like the set you linked at EK, all are made for most common layout like what you have on the Das.

Thank you Ivan! ;D This makes much more sense.

Another question please: will I need any customized settings in the "keycap compatibility" section if I were to buy from here?: http://www.wasdkeyboards.com/index.php/104-key-cherry-mx-keycap-set.html#ad-image-0

I don't know what "row 1, 1x1" means, exactly. I assume my "row 1" on the daskeyboard ultimate s refers to the first row on my keyboard, which is a 1x1 size, and that my OS, Media, and |\ keys don't need to be shaped as 1x1, because those specific keys aren't 1x1 on a daskeyboard? Sorry if it sounds noobish, I'm learning as I go.

Keycaps are unit size. Alphanumerics are 1 unit or 1x1. Larger key will be marked like 2.25 it is 2 and a quarter size of alpha keys. The keys on the bottom like Control and etc would be 1.25, \| is 1.5. If you're buying a full set all those are included, so nothing additional is required unless you want to get additional different color for something.
WASD or those cheap sets at EK are basic quality like the stock keys that came with the keyboard. If you want to really improve experience I would recommend some Cherry doubleshot or PBT dyesubs key set. You can just go to the top of quality and be done. Have a look at WTS in the classifieds as people are often selling lightly used sets, or at originativeco.com. If you're not in a hurry there is the groupbuy section also.
