To let you know what you are getting for your $14, the Teensy 2.0 with pins sells for $19 plus shipping from PJRC.com. Their base shipping cost is $3.50 or so. The only difference here is that you have to solder on the header pins to the Teensy. Which is very easy to do. So, by soldering your own pins, and ordering in bulk, you will save at least $6 for one piece. Consider each additional unit you order as an additional $5 saved.

How hard is it to solder these together? Is it like SMD work or like soldering switches?

Just like soldering switches. Nothing much to it, really.

I'll pass on this one. Still got a Teensy left over from the last buy, and it'll be awhile before it gets used.

Glad to see more are getting circulated, though!

I've been looking around online and it seems that the ErgoDox only works with teensy 2.0 and not 3.0/3.1, correct? If this is true and I can only use 2.0 I'll be in for one or two, have to confirm with a friend if he wants one.

Just so there is an apples to apples comparison, pjrc does sell the Teensy 2.0 without headers for $16. CONUS shipping for one is ~$3, going up to ~$3.5 for eight. So while you definitely do save with this, the savings are not quite as pronounced as the original post indicates.

$20.60 for one from pjrc; $16.50 from this group buy
$145 for eight from pjrc; $118 for eight from this group buy

Definite thanks to jdcarpe for organizing this, though!

Edit: Missed the headers, updating comparison. This (with headers) is still cheaper than buying from pjrc without headers, by the way.

xmagusx: Yes looked at those numbers. It's a coupla bucks saved, and as (Jefferson? Edison?) said, a penny saved is ... (also you're getting the header pins which are also a couple bucks, so I think it works out to $3 saved if you get just one)

HydroMule: that PCB expressly expects by its pinouts to be given the 2.0 in particular, yes. Same with the phantom.

$131.50 for eight from pjrc; $118 for eight from this group buy

looked at that site and it seems that international orders (Canada) doesn't really make a difference and saves like 50 cents going through pjrc but I don't know if header pins are included. and going with adafruit theirs is $20 and $9.50 shipping I think.  So this ends up being a little cheaper.

alright thanks!

You get a 40-pin set of header pins by ordering from me, so let's do the math, shall we?

From PJRC:
Quote
2    HEADER_20x1   Pins (header), 20 pins, 0.1 inch (2.54 mm) spacing    0.80   1.60
1   TEENSY   Teensy USB Board    16.00   16.00
Subtotal:    17.60
US Mail: 3.03
Total: 20.63

From this GB:
1 Teensy 2.0 w/40-pin header: 14.00 14.00
US Mail: 2.50
Total: 16.50

20.63-16.50= $4.13 saved, and I said $6. Oops. Anything else you want to point out??

For those who can't easily buy it, had you considered offering the chip on the other ErgoDox PCB with each Teensey?

If this doesn't get more orders soon, I'm probably going to cancel the buy. Unless everyone is okay with paying $15.60 each for their Teensys. That's the best price I can do if we don't hit 100 units.

That still saves you $2 per unit versus ordering at retail for the Teensy ($16) and header pins ($1.60), at $17.60.

That's too bad. I was wondering when I would see an invoice come in for this. I would only need two but it's not like that will make a huge difference :/

What kind of discount could we get if the order was just for 50 rather than the 100 because it isn't looking like we are going to make it.

Price breaks are at 25 and 100 units only. At 25-99 units, I would have to add $1.60 to each Teensy ordered, making them $15.60/ea. I know that doesn't sound different than the $16.00 they cost at retail, but if you add the cost of header pins from PJRC ($0.80/ea x 2=$1.60), you actually save $2.00.

I was hoping we would make 100 units ordered, because I really need Teensys, but I can't afford to buy us up to 100 on my own. :(

I might need a few but when I ordered from the previous teensy GB it turned out to be more expensive than when I ordered from PJRC directly, simply because he charges about half for international shipping. I have to order 4 to make up for it and for me to save anything by entering into this GB. It doesn't make much sense for international orders I am afraid.

MechanicalKeyboards, always coming through for our group buys!

With my order, that puts us over 100, everyone. I will start invoicing this weekend, and you will have until February 21 to get all payments in. The sooner the better though, so that I can order the Teensys from PJRC once I receive all payments.

THANK YOU, EVERYONE!!

P.S. If you were waiting to put in a last minute order, you had better do it quickly!

Unless there are any objections, Muirium at Deskthority has offered to proxy shipping for all European orders. That should save a few of you a fair bit of money. If you have an order shipping to Europe and don't want to be in the proxy shipping group, please let me know now, so that I can invoice you for the full shipping cost.

Thanks for the quick payments, so far!

FYI, I will be marking these as "shipped" with Paypal, but obviously I don't even have the Teensys in hand yet. Once I receive all payments, I will order the Teensys from PJRC. When I receive them, I will begin shipping them out, and I will update the OP with a tracking number next to your name.

If you haven't paid yet, you are not in trouble. The payment deadline is still February 21st. But if I happen to receive all payments before then, I will place the order sooner.

I believe it is just classifieds that has the required post count. I'm not sure if JD closed orders or not yet, but with his last post on here he mentioned that he might leave orders open until he received all the payments or Feb. 21 rolls around.

As long as you can pay right away, I left the order form open. I've been trying to stay on top of sending invoices out to people placing new orders, so that they don't have to wait to make their payment.

The Teensys are en route to me, and will arrive Monday evening. I'll be honest, I won't have much time before next weekend to get things packed up and sent. I'll try, but I make no promises. :)

It's no real problem. Packing and shipping only takes a couple hours, really. It's just a matter of finding those couple hours during the week that becomes a challenge. That's why I tend to do most of my packing for GBs on weekends.

Anyone know of a cheap way to power a teensy without a computer? I seem to be using them everywhere in more or less permanent installations.

I have been using power plugs meant for charging USB devices and a USB cable until now. It is basically a wall plug with a USB connector on it (pretty much a small sized 230VAC-5VDC transformer I guess). I think we need a list of sources for the cheapest power plug USB chargers.

take any 5v power rail, hook the ground up to ground on a USB mini connector, and the 5V to the 5V pin and the teensy will power up when you plug in the mini USB. the teensy only asks for 500ma, so as long as your power supply can give it that, you're good. in the US, the cheapest reliable USB wall warts are probably monoprice's. otherwise, i'd say buy like 5 off of ebay from an HK seller with high feedback, test them all and just toss the ones that don't work.

QUICK UPDATE:

Teensys arrived Monday, as scheduled. All European orders going via proxy (Muirium) have been shipped as of today. Also shipped the large order to Josh@MechanicalKeyboards today. Will work on getting the rest packed and labeled this weekend, to go out in Monday's mail.

I got my pair today.  However, it will be quite some time before I use it.  Hopefully, after my midterms are over with, I can get some soldering equipment to tinker with the Teensy.

I, however, have already melted one of mine.

Fortunately that surface mount thing that's next to the mid-pin the ergodox relies on is either a resistor, or I got incredibly lucky reattaching it in the correct direction. I've since that heart stopping moment, programmed the teensy repeatedly and it seems to work as I'd expect.

Hopefully my coworkers will have better luck with this thing on their projects. Or at least not worse.

jorgenslee, I just got a tracking update for your package, and they just processed though customs in Chicago! They were sent on the same day as the other 8 international packages I sent, so I don't know if USPS lost them in their system for 2 weeks or what. But know that your Teensys are on their way, and I apologize on behalf of USPS for them taking so long to get there.
