Modding a Ducky Shine 3's Lights
« on: Mon, 13 January 2014, 22:13:59 »
I ordered the Magenta Ducky Shine 3, partially because the model with MX Brown is out of stock in blue LEDs and partially because magenta seems like a more outlandish color to pick. I've read the magenta lights are more pink than purple. I like pink, but I like purple more. If I like the magenta lights as pink, I think I could come up with some cool combo like blue and magenta or green and magenta. If I'm not satisfied at all with magenta, I'd want to swap all the lights out eventually.  Is it possible to swap out the LEDs in this keyboard? Is there a specific kind of LED I'd need? Is soldering required? The keyboard will arrive tomorrow. It's my first mechanical.

soldering and desoldering is DEFINITELY required.

Alright, cool. I found the questions/answers I'll need too.
Is this considered hard/risky at all? I'm careful enough to be able to build a PC.

ive tried this before on wasd keys.

Its not  risky if you De-solder Correctly.

Step 1 Desolder the solder attached to the leds
Step 2 Remove the leds
Step 3 put new ones in.
Step 4 Tape it
Step 5 Solder it

I followed WhiteFireDragons Kmac 2 Build for the Re-soldering process (All Credits To WFD)

Its set to start at  21:18

Soldering and desoldering is a step up from building a PC, but it's really not that bad. I desoldered/resoldered all the switches on my filco recently with no soldering experience whatsoever and relatively inexpensive gear, and it went fine. As long as you're careful and watch a couple videos before you jump in you should be fine.
main kbs:  87UB (55g)  Custom Filco TKL (62g clears)

WTS JD40, Custom Ergoclear Filco

WTB ROHS Red BBv2 (Topre), OG EK Tri-Color Skull (TOPRE)

So what kind/brand of lights should I look out for?
