LF a keyboard (specs inside)
« on: Thu, 16 January 2014, 06:23:02 »
First off, sorry if its not the right forum section. Had a look around, not sure where it belongs, my apology if i'm doing it wrong. Anyway,  I could use your guys help for my new keyboard.

Here are some relevant infos:

- I'm European, so no ASN format. Need 87 keys with the larger enter key (http://cdn.wasdkeyboards.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/thumbnail/492x/040ec09b1e35df139433887a97daa66f/v/2/v2-88-2_1.jpg )

- TK format

- Red Cherry (would love to test Blue but it's IMPOSSIBLE to find where I live)

I typically love what WASD is offering, "pure" design, LOTS of customization possible etc, but the problem is right now they don't have red cherry EU 87 keys keyboards available. And it's gonna be a 3 months wait, therefor i'm looking for a good alternative. What do you guys think ? Looked for Quickfire TK, impossible to find in Red Cherry/EU format. Ducky impossible to find in Switzerland either.

Any thoughts ?

The key layout is called ISO.

When you say TK, do you mean WITH a tenkey pad as in without the arrow and edit keys like the Coolermaster TK and Roccat Arvo, or do you mean TKL as in Tenkey-less (with the arrow keys and edit cluster, but no numpad)?

AFAIK, the only mechanical board with the tenkey pad only is the CoolerMaster QuickFire TK.

You can order Ducky keyboards online from a few stores in EU (teraset.net is the first that comes to mind) and they'll ship to Switzerland no problem. No import duties then, since it's from inside EU. They have Nordic layout boards mostly, but it shouldn't be too hard to find an AZERTY or QWERTZ set of keycaps for it.

Any reason you only mention Red and Blue switches? Browns have some of the tactility of Blues, but lack the click and are easy to find.
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.

Yes, ISO, thank you. My interest in non mainstream keyboard is kinda new ;)

I meant "TK" as in compact. Sorry, still new with those terms! No numpad, can probably do without the arrow keys too although I don't mind having them. Just something more compact than your standard full keyboard. But no numpad for sure.

I mentioned Red keys because that's what I got currently and like it. Ive tested brown but I found it super not responsive, really didnt like it. Didn't think it was that different from Red. I don't want black because i heard it's bad if you tend to have rather fragile hands/articulation, which i do have. Interested in testing blue because i don't only play but also type quite a bit, and apparently its pretty good for typing. Seems impossible to find a MX Blue keyboard to test in Geneva though..

Had a look at the website you mentioned, teraset, found some German/Nordic layout indeed, no idea if they can modify it to offer a Swiss layout or if i'd have to change it all myself (which is a bit of a hassle for me since i'd have no idea what to pick).

So yeah

- ISO
- QUERTZ (Swiss)
- Red cherry
- TKL
- Ships to Switzerland

Checked a lot of shops, ebay etc, seems impossible to find what i'm looking for. WASD should be able to deliver this, but not before 3 months..

Yeah the rest of the things are easy to cater for bar the QUERTZ, would you be OK getting a keyboard with the wrong layout (such as UK or DE) but with the rest of those specs? That would be very easy to acquire.

Yeah sure, it does have to be ISO but I actually wouldn't mind blank keys (as in with no letters/numbers on them). I'd rather have no signs whatsoever than a layout i'm not used to, though.

I guess that would mean separately buying a whole set of blank keys ?

You can get a Nordic ISO Ducky G2 Pro (red switches) or Shine 3 TKL (red switches, red or white LEDs) and a set of blank keys from Teraset, but the combined price is pretty high.

They also have a German layout G2Pro with red switches and engraved PBT caps. If you can live with the small differences, this could be a good one.

They have QWERTZ (German) layout Shine 3 TKL (red switches, blue LEDs) here: http://www.getdigital.eu/Ducky-Keyboard.html

I have found blank ISO sets either very hard to find or very expensive, unfortunately (49 euro from teraset).

Apparently some Ducky G2 Pros come with blank caps, but I can't seem to find an ISO one.

I actually recommend, in this case, a Shine 3 Yellow. I have one personally, and they come with the highest quality caps (thick PBT) and are blank or engraved. The board itself is also very well-made, and the lighting features are top-notch. Mine is in TKL, and they have it in both TKL and 104-key.

Also, I've tried the TK, and it was my daily keyboard for quite a while. A good board, never had any issues with it. Modifier row was a bit annoying (not being able to mod it), but otherwise it was great, especially after changing out the caps for a cheap PBT set.

If you don't manage to get any of the Ducky boards then you could just get a basic TKL like a CM Storm QuickFire Rapid and then one of the blank keysets from WASD Keyboards (such as http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dark-Grey-Cherry-MX-Blank-Keycaps-88-ISO-Set-Keyboard-Key-Caps-/110937288089?pt=PCA_Mice_Trackballs&hash=item19d460ad99) until you manage to find something more to your liking?
