Yay iPhone camera distortion!

The retro set really suits the 40% layout.

Maybe because keyboard of old did not have function keys, arrow keys and all the rest of the extra keys that we can't live without these days.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. I'm curious how you home row on a 40% without a ' key

That's what I'm worried about too. Once you get used to the 40% layout, you'll be pressing ";" instead of enter every time.

Nifty looking keyboard! I'm still waiting for the SF GB ;) Btw, what's the up arrow (in the middle) programmed to?

Your layout is definitely a unique, novel approach. I don't know that I could ever get used to using it, but some things about it are very intuitive. I hope I programmed it correctly. I tested it, so it should be. :)

It's certainly different and will take a lot of getting used to, but everything is working properly. :thumb:

Interesting - but why didn't you put all punctuation and symbols on a single layer? Looks like some symbols need to be shifted - gosh, I do not even remember whether that is standard qwerty behaviour?

Does anyone use a 40% for actual work? It may be useful to know his/her experience.

I do - even though there are still technically more keys present than I use (and even some duplicate assignments on diferent layers) my split daily driver features only 3 rows with 5 keys each plus 3 thumb keys and a few extra mods, so is quite similar to a 40% in terms of size.

I have omitted the function keys as well as some modifiers below, but with 4 layers everything I need for programming and mainly command line work is available with a tuned layout very comfortably on a 40% board.

Once you get used to it, toggle the layers automatically without thinking and can touchtype anything blindly, I'd say it is definitely very usable for everyday work, even more so than larger boards as your fingers do not nearly move as much! Sure, you have to find a smart way to arrange the modifers you often need and combine in firmware, maybe even create a few custom macros if you rely on "Ctrl-Shift-]" or similar combinations, but this is merely an exercise in figuring out what you really need and then re-using some keys with a second mode when pressed together.

Not a bad layout. You have some weird letters where more Commodore keys should be though. You should look to that.

My JD40 arrived today, got her all soldered up and ready to go. All I need now is to program it!  :thumb:

Layout I'm using with it. Top is normal, bottom Fn, and bottom side Fn2.

Edit:Added newer photo and layout .hex and .dat

Every time I see that eject key I am sad I do not have one.  Nice 40.    :thumb:

Thanks! The Skull Squadron set was the best impulse buy I've ever made. I heard rumors that it was going to happen again, but I have yet to see that happen sadly.

Got my JD40 on order, so I am thinking about layouts.  I will probably have some custom keycaps silkscreened by WASD.  This is my tenative layout:

JD40 Keymap Layout by samwisekoi 2014

Thoughts, anyone?

Oh; this will only be used for Linux, so no need for WIN, MENU, etc.  Also, I might move the arrows to the WASD cluster.  They are on the bottom for easy access while gaming.

[EDIT] I have attached the spreadsheet template I used to make this layout.  No warranty is expressed or implied, so if this is helpful, great!  Otherwise, never mind.

I like keyboards and case modding.  Everything about a computer should be silent -- except the KEYBOARD!
