Geekhackers.org - Services, Projects, and Reseller Information

For Geekhackers by Geekhackers.

What is GeekHackers.org?
Geekhackers is mkawa’s community-driven and community-centric retail entity. It is a fully registered business, located in California, USA. Geekhackers sells and has sold primarily tools, specialty chemicals, geekhack novelty keys, and various other items. Although Geekhackers is not a non-profit federal entity, its mission is:

First, to help promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education via tool kits, materials kits, and novel keyboard products that highlight the limits of manufacturing technology (for example, overmolded polycarbonate and ABS keycaps, silver alloy/zinc superalloy coated keycaps, and more).

Second, Geekhackers aims to build a "nest egg" for geekhack.org. If there were to be a black swan event (such as what we now call "the rootworm incident"), Geekhackers' aims to be ready to step in with money to recover service and an orderly forum as quickly as humanly possible.

In order to achieve these two missions, Geekhackers, first, does its best not to make money year-over-year. Profits from individual sales are reinvested into the retail outlet and into the community. Note that the book-keeping here gets a bit messy, as Geekhackers must spend on inventory, community labor, and return of initial and supporting investments by the business owner (namely one mkawa).

Note that despite being a non-profit, because of the second mission statement, Geekhackers also collects donations collected by the donation links on the forum.

Who is behind GeekHackers.org?

The main force behind GeekHackers.org is mkawa. However, many community members have helped Geekhackers projects come to fruition, including but hardly limited to: Cptbadass (who designed the original solder spool), Melvang (who did the vast majority of mechanical work on the workholders), jdcarpe (who has contributed multiple engineering drawings for the titanium sheet metal projects), photoelectric (who consults on Krytox formulations), Binge (who helps support the mold and casters in the community), Boilermaker (who donated fulfillment of the first year of novelty keycaps), and many many more.

Will there ever be an actual GeekHackers.org webpage?
Yes, finally!

The Geekhackers retail front is at http://www.geekhackers.org/

The Geekhackers youtube channel is at http://www.youtube.com/geekhackin

What Projects and Services is GeekHackers.org working on?
  • Custom pressure and/or vacuum circuits. The focus lately has been on casting and molding rigs that can be more or less guaranteed to be  _safe_ ways to cast resins in silicone rubber molds. mkawa builds the circuit in-situ and ships it nearly whole to buyers. Please be aware that mkawa does not source cheap, unreliable parts in any position and hence his pricing is necessarily higher than a trip to harbor freight (PLEASE DO NOT BUY HFT PRESSURE OR VACUUM PRODUCTS, THEY ARE WELL KNOWN TO INJURE AND/OR KILL WHEN, NOT IF THEY MALFUNCTION). One of his major goals in this is to keep people safe, so if you are using an unsafe rig but maybe don't have a huge budget, please feel free to give mkawa a ring anyway.
  • Specialty chemicals for cast and mold. Once you start playing with casting and molding, you will see that there are several issues: mold lifetime, ease of removing a cast item from a mold, and various other polymer compatibility issues. mkawa can offer solutions to many of these issues that have been tested by the casters on the forum due to my supplier connections.
  • Higher-end solder stations from Edsyn. mkawa can source most of Edsyn's product line at a small to substantial discount from list price, depending on item. Please PM if you're interested to speak with mkawa about application, budget, etc.  His view is that Edsyn's line is _almost_ complete; there is something for every budget and skill level (_except_ for a first step 230v iron, but he is working on that!!).
  • ABS printed prototypes on the Geekhackers Makerbot Replicator 2X (aka SmallFry's Bot). This works best if you have cad that is ready to go, but mkawa can work with you to design for the printer if you have cad in design.
  • Limited soldering work/rework. mkawa has looked extensively at the TRiK debounce issue and believe i have a fix that requires access to the board. This goes for any version of the board. He doesn't really offer a general soldering service, as there are plenty of options in the community in that regard, but he may do some higher difficulty SMT construction en masse at some point.
  • Custom powdercoating via our powdercoater, Rainbow Paint and Blast, in Iowa. Collectively, we own about 20lbs of powder, now resident with the resident powdercoating genius at RPB: Tammi. She is awesome and can paint pretty much anything to look freaking amazing. Check out the Geekhackers Panavise 301 GB to see some of her work.
  • In addition to the projects/services listed above, CaptainBadAss has been trying to find machine shops willing to work with our community. He has also helped design the solder holders that mkawa was printed. UPDATE: we have two machine shops who work with our community, with a third likely to come. PM for contact information.

CPTBadAss has added the links for the 3D printing thread, mkawa's second soldering kit IC, GeekHack/TechKeys caps, and sorborthane landing pads IC below:

There really aren't that many 'community' options to get projects soldered/built etc. Most everyone who was offering services either quit, disappeared and/or have a serious backlog, some I've heard have been holding onto boards for over 3 months.

Competition is good :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

if it's not too complicated, a single board would probably just hit their minimum charge, which is 70$ and then shipping to and from. for the most part we have enough powder or they have inexpensive stock powders (they stock RAL colors), so that part isn't so much of the cost. it's mostly just the minimum charge on a small job like that. PM me with what you want and i'll work it up with tammi?

Folks,

I have been doing a bunch of this stuff behind the scenes, but I figured I should make it public, so that people don't have to flail around by themselves before finding out that I offer a copacetic service sans flailing. Hence, lately, I have been offering the following services for relatively low cost and high technical support to those in the community:
1) Custom pressure and/or vacuum circuits.
2) Specialty chemicals for cast and mold.
2) Higher-end solder stations from Edsyn.
3) ABS printed prototypes on the Geekhackers Makerbot Replicator 2X
4) Limited soldering work/rework.
5) Custom powdercoating via our powdercoater, Rainbow Paint and Blast, in Iowa.
-Kawa

Congratulations! It's good to know that Geekhacks is gong to provide services.

I agreed that pressure and/or vacuum circuits can kill people seriously!
It happened in Vietnam many times :

Be safe guys and don't try it at home! ;D

Another reason to not buy from harbor freight is 99% of it is foreign made crap.  I work with a lot of guys that buy tools from there and I have yet to see one tool that was worth the money.

big designs are best split into bite size chunks for a number of reasons. first, because you always want to design things that build upwards. second, because the flattest part of the build plate is always the center. third, big objects = long builds. it SUCKS to have a build screw up on one little feature like 8 hours in and have to scrap the whole thing.

in construction of items in general, this is all true. you don't make a wooden box generally out of a single piece of wood. you take flat pieces of wood and fasten them together. think of it that way. acetone actually is an attachment mechanism and ABS is very conducive to things like dovetail joints and snaps.

that said, very very tall things are actually pretty easy to make as long as their diameter keeps shrinking up the object. a very direct example of this is the soldering iron holder i designed. that print basically never fails because it follows all of these (except for modularity.. i'd actually like to make the sides detachable) tenets to a tee.

powder blue
natural

from makerbot industries:

acid lake
deep dark teal
sanguine red

for very complex prints that need extensive support struts to print, or very small parts that need to be encased in removable material, i have 2kg of HIPs dissolvable support filament and two-extruder capability.

i did actually have some black PLA quite a while ago, but the r2x heads are quite poor at printing PLA due to low temperature gradient and hot hot ends. anyway, bottom line is that i have about 5kg of filament right now and would prefer to bring my on-hand stock down to more like 2-3kg of filament on hand at any one time due to the prices and the fact that most people don't really care what color their tools are :P

that said, if people want to get stuff printed in a particular color and are willing to shell out about 40-50$ for a spool, i will only print toybuilder and MBI (possibly ultimaker, but i need a sample first) filament, i'm happy to print in your color. just shoot me a PM

Will do.  If it is some sort of a bright green I had something in mind but I'm not sure about getting a cad file for it.

Alright in that case the natural would probably be the best and then use some sort of dye (thinking vinyl dye) to either black or a bright green to go with the toxic set.  But I was wanting a 2 sets of centronics 36 connector covers with holes to screw them together instead of the snaps on each side that are kind of a pita to get into.

toybuilder's black is cheap enough right now that i can pick some up. they also have a yellow-green that it's a bit more vivid than plain green. but check out makerbot's nuclear green. that might be exactly what you're looking for

thanks cptbadass!

the living 3d printing thread has some info on where geekhackers' rapid prototyping and cottage production line will be going. lube is another "sticky issue" (hah) at the moment.

220v learn to solder kit development has started in earnest. i am QAing and rebuilding a set of inexpensive but beefy step-down transformers that I will integrate into the LTS kits' extension cords for 220v versions. the transformers currently terminate in 2-pin unearthed europlug. more importantly, they have beefy solid-core transformers, are properly fused and have thick molded casement. i will be converting them to an earthed europlug variant, rewiring up to 12ga internally, and then potting. final cost will probably be an additional 20$ over the 110v LTS kit.

so, today i rebuilt a 500W step-up converter so that it won't blow up or melt or arc and electrocute me. i'm pretty sure this thing had the worst point to point soldering i have ever seen. none of the heatshrink had ever seen heat, there were completely exposed, dull gray joints like 10mm apart that could be carrying up to 7a 120v or 3-4a 240v, the ground wire was literally circling the device.. and then the kicker was that not a single wire in the thing was actually rated up to 500W. it was all 20ga stranded, and then some poor lineworker had literally run every wire in the most convoluted way possible, because the encasement was specced with about 3mm between the transformer (hand wound and then literally covered with _paper_ as the last measure dieletric) and the case sides in all directions.

so frightening. please be careful out there 220v folks.

As some people have noticed, the Krytox One Keyboard Kits that were launched late last year have been difficult to obtain at market. Further, there have been long delays on availability of other Geekhackers staple products like the monthly Geekhack keycap, special projects Geekhack keycaps and other logo paraphenalia that Geekhackers has engaged in in the past such as custom vinyl stickers, keycap checking sheets et&c et&c.

As with many things, the fault here lies mainly with me; I have been a major bottleneck in the Geekhackers mini-supply-chain. Hence, I have come to distribution agreements with three great, community-oriented members of our vendor community, and may reach out to even more when Geekhackers can produce products that are synergistic with vendor product offerings. In the meantime, I will link the vendors and the Geekhackers goods they are selling in this thread:

yah, actually, i was going to start on that with lastpilot's designs but i completely forgot about it. they will very likely be footy/soccer/rugby style jerseys, but i have a source to get these made that i bug every once in a while and then we both completely forget about it.
