Why do people buy $300 shoes?

This is an intimate, personal item that you use and are in physical contact with for many hours every day.
"However, even though I was born in the Mesozoic, I do know what anyone who wants to reach out to young people should say: Billionaires took your money. They took your chance to buy a home. They took your chance at a good education. They stole your opportunities. Billionaires took the things you want in life. If you really want those things, you have to take them back.
That's the message. That's the whole message. Say that every day, not just to reach America's frustrated young white men, but people of every age, race, and gender.
Late-stage capitalism is a wealth-concentration engine, focused on vacuuming up every dollar and putting it in as few hands as possible. Republicans are helping that vacuum suck.
How does a tiny fraction of the population get away with this? They do it by dividing the other 99% of Americans against themselves."

Does eating out at a restaurant bring some return on the investment?  What about concert tickets or tickets to a sports game?  What about jewelry? I don't think we get keyboards as investments.  They are a hobby for fun.  The return on investment is fun.

And the note about rich people?  Please, what a skewed, unhappy way to look at life.

Agree, it comes down to the point what money means to one person. Some people just love stacking them in the bank cause it gives some sort of stability, it takes one day for the economy to crash and your precious value that you have  stashed to drop to 90% below of whats use to worth.

I don't stress over money, I had high school friend from my country visiting some family in the US, had some trouble with them and he left their house and had few more months on his travelling visa left. He was plain broke, not even money for cigs, I took care of him for those 2 months and gave him some money when he went home. There I was around $1000+ shorter when he left, I don't regret a dime I have spent,  that was 3 years a go and  I have never mentioned to him that he owes anything to me, I don't care is just money.

If money defines you for what you are, then your one poor poor individual and I'm not speaking financial wise, don't be uptight live up a little but also don't bring yourself to a beggars point.

nah.  they actually realize it's a troll.

pay close attention to what they're actually saying.

notice that it's oddly similar to a conversation that you have in normal life?  it's just the standard 'what did you like about that movie?' conversation where everyone states their interpretation of the same thing. whether or not the op or another poster is trolling, everyone else is just enjoying everyone elses' company.

They are mx, not even topre.  Does the $200+ difference justify the quality of the korean custom keyboards opposed to a qfr or filco?  I would really like to know what custom keyboards offer that a standard mechanical keyboard does not.

why? because.... and I'll try to speak in my name:

- hefty weight, all keyboard made out of aluminum block
- work hard and I earn money and don't waste them on drugs, gambling, or whatever is trendy crap out there this days
- because its fun to build them your self

BTW when I was done with mine, keycaps+switches+leds+board etc etc etc costed me around $700, you think this is crazy? spending $700 for something that can be bought on ebay for $5, not same but will do the same task then yes its crazy. How about spending $400 on a single keycap? how come you haven't ask why in the world would someone spend $400 on a single plastic keycap? Oh that's Click Clack, it has a value right?

That keyboard is so sweet. Did it really cost you 700??

What costs you the most on that build?

For me, it's simple. I spend 10+ hours/day on the computer between school/work/gaming, and I'd much rather be comfortable while doing so. If I find something that I like, I'm going to pay whatever I deem the product is worth to get it, and then I'll usually use it until it's life is over, or until I've put enough time into it to turn it over for a profit. Same goes for keyboards. I'm going to keep it until it's dead, or until somebody wants to give me more money than I paid for it.

The kit itself was like $560 if I'm remembering correctly (you can check the redline subforum if that thread is still up).  Add in caps, switches, LED work, cable, etc and it gets up there pretty fast.

Here we go again...

There are three kinds of $300+ keyboards:
  • Ergonomic keyboards. They cost that much, because it's a niche market. If spending $2k on a datahand saves your carrier, it's probably worth it.
  • Rare collector items. That's obvious. Collectors are just... collectors.
  • Custom keyboards. I don't get why people get them. It's probably the same reason why they buy clacks for insane amounts of money. I suspect the reasons behind it are similar to buying supersport cars... or hummers.

I will never understand why people have to assume others are spending their money to impress everyone. Just because someone has a passion(for sprots cars, clothes, keyboards, etc), and the money to pursue it doesn't mean that they are doing it for anyone but themselves.

It just sounds like pure jealously to me, if you can't understand it, then why make ignorant assumptions?

Sure, there ARE people out there who are going to try to show off and impress anyone they can, but how does that make you any better by going out of your way to insult them?

Well mine were kindof accidental and I never counted it up until recently!

Happened like this, I got a Poker for ~$100 the day they came out because I was living in China at the time.  Later, wanted to change the keycaps on it.  Bought two cool 'skull' caps from EK by some CC guy for $15 and $25 each, boy I thought I was POURING money down the drain by buying those (later sold the tri-color to a member for $40...felt guilty for ripping him off; he sold it for $250 a couple of weeks ago, talk about ROI!).  Then there was a group buy for some keycaps...maybe the largest one in history.  People kept adding caps and adding and I kept seeing more and more that I wanted.  BAM!  $250 in keycaps.  Then I wanted a metal base because I like the way metal feels...another $130.  So that's like over three hundred bucks just on one of my Pokers.  I would never sell it to buy a HHKB.  I really love the way the keys feel with a plate (oh forgot to add that!) and the metal base gives the keys a really solid feel.  The SP double shots are shining to hell, but they won't ever wear off like the stock caps would have.

There, that's my rationalization.  To each his own.  I don't make fun of people who buy Topre!

(much of the financing of my keyboard hobby was from bringing over keyboards from China and selling them to folks here)
