Two things: Keyboard and Audio related.
« on: Mon, 17 February 2014, 08:57:12 »
So let's start off with the keyboard one first as we're all keyboard geeks here!

Firstly my keyboard question.

I'm currently typing on a Noppoo Choc mini and this is my second one now, but I've noticed and I'm not sure if this is just me typing too fast and not realising it or whatever but it seems that from time to time I'm getting key chattering on the letter D and this is essentially what broke my last keyboard.

Bear in mind, I've only had this replacement since around December 17th, so it's a little bit unusual for it to be happening, I have red cherry keys so maybe it's just me typing like I said, too fast and not realising the keys that I pressed, I've not noticed it here while typing, so maybe it's just a one off occurance or whatever. Does anyone else notice this on either a.) their cherry mx red board or b.) their choc mini.

Secondly my audio question.

So a while back now I thought it was time to upgrade so I did so in spectacular fashion, I went and got:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0011UB9CQ/ref=oh_details_o08_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004MF39YS/ref=oh_details_o07_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But I've noticed that the Samson mic picks up pretty much every little bit of background noise, the fans on my computer, external noises even outside of my door etc, so it's just really annoying, even more so when I've gone and spent 50-60 pound on a Mic hoping that it would be far superior to my last.

The sound quality is absolutely amazing, my voice sounds crystal clear, but the background noise is really aggravating.

I'm just wondering what I could do to fix such a problem? Would something like this help?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000LB11QA/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A1PJPNQVS8EHKC

Any advice would be brilliant.

Thanks.

Noppoo Choc Mini seems to have a general debouncing issue. I'm not sure if it's ever been solved. Don't know about your mic.

clip it to the wire of your head phone or your actual shirt.

10s of thousands of gamers use that mic for a reason. good voice quality not sensitive enough to pick up background noise. it's cheap **** try it out.

Oh the geekhack solution of throw money at it.

I would adjust mic gain and sensitivity settings in your OS of choice first.  It's likely everything's all cattywompus right now.  Then, try the wind sock thing.

Yeah already did that my man, it's not got that many options unfortunately, but I've put it down to about 70% volume and the background noise does deafen quite a bit.

This had been advised to me quite a bit to be honest with you, it does seem like a good viable option, might buy this and test it out and like you said, it's very cheap so no harm no foul really.

It's quite annoying really as I really love this keyboard, it's only been a few occassions here and there, so nothing extreme but if this keyboard ends up getting heavy debouncing issues, then I wont be buying another and will have to use my Keycool  84 /w Browns and that's not really a road I'd like to go down, too much of a Red fanboy.

The wind-sock as TJ puts it is more to prevent changes in the flow of air from creating pop/hiss in the microphone feed.  It will attenuate some higher frequency sound, but your fans are more complex than just high frequency.  Most sounds are made up of a lower order fundamental pure tone and higher order harmonic tones.  For instance a snare hit has a huge frequency range.

This is why people get what are known as uni-directional microphones for broadcast purposes.  The mic you have is most likely omnidirectional, and so it picks up acoustic information in close to 360 degrees.

a good uni-directional microphone will have a cardioid polar pattern, and if you chose to you could use a bi-directional mic and completely soundproof the rear pole.

Hope this helps!  Audio is complicated :D

Thanks for the lost post, but didn't really help me unfortunately.

I do have a cardioid mic, as that's what the samson meteor mic is, but yeah. I guess there's nothing I can do, I guess I'll just buy a new mic or whatever, great.
