and a few of them are trolls :|
Really?  :'(

Probably ripster fanboys after his post in his ego stroking subreddit.

There is an entry for "Ripster". Whether it's actually him or not, I don't really know, but if the trolling could be kept on a low that would be greatly appreciated. I don't really care what he thinks about GH or not, but there's no reason to mess with this poll.

So I completed the survey, but I couldn't put down that I've owned more then 100 boards. It wouldn't let me continue so I set it to 99.

:(

This. Very irritating.

And such a Cherry-centric set of questions. It is insulting to those of us who think that Cherry switches are 2nd class in many ways.

Above and beyond that, questions focused on new and current boards rather than vintage stuff.

i need a "buckling spring is 2nd class" option.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

You just put us Cherry users in a "class" here. LOL. Well, I love my keyboard so no offense taken, but I'd prefer arguments based on facts, than empty remarks like that. Of course you were "irritated", so I should understand the comment as coming from somewhere else, but your brain.  ;)

I agree that switch selection on future surveys should stop at switch "family" for all (Cherry, Topre, Alps, buckling spring, scissor, membrane, virtual/touch, reed/hall, other). A follow-up question could ask for switch genus and species. You might also do a "rate from 1 to 5 each of these switches" - if one switch get a 5 and every other switch gets a 1, or if virtual/touch gets anything but a 1 - that is a troll.

It might also be nice to have people rate from 1 to 5 various layouts (ignoring switches and brands normally associated) from "keyboard pixel art" representations.

Normally I ignore responses such as this, but first, I have said nothing whatsoever about "Cherry users", I only remarked that Cherry switches are not the only switches out there, and, additionally, that they are not considered particularly "good" or "desirable" by many users (and I will freely admit that "we" (whatever class or group you fabricate around "us", whoever "we" are) may be the minority) and that a multitude of other options are available.

The fact is that more than 100 keyboards have, indeed, passed across my desk, and I have completely disassembled dozens of them to understand how they work.

I certainly do not know everything, and learn something new every day, but I am fairly well-educated in keyboard construction, much of it through hands-on experience.

I feel that comparisons between Cherry switches and Alps switches are appropriate and informative, since these two families have considerable similarities and characteristics. It is bizarre and inappropriate to list out a dozen Cherry switches individually but lump a dozen Alps switches together. And to ignore "similar" switches such as SMK and Monterey is silly.

Then there are at least half a dozen other "major" switch categories that should be explored, and myriad "strange and obsolete" switch types.

Therefore, my criticism of the survey is because of its narrow focus on a subset of the universe of keyboards.

I agree, and I'd like to add that this logic should make its way into the next survey. I think this survey makes for a good starting point and certainly leads to a good discussion.

Cherry MX is a very interesting mechanical switch because there are so many unique variations (ex clicky blue vs linear grey). Much like alps, but in much higher production. Cherry has become a very popular switch type among keyboard enthusiasts because of how common they've become.

I can't wait to see the data :thumb:

In regards to the Alps and "other" switches: I added the "alps" and "other" section because I assumed that I would get significantly less responses for "less popular" switches, Alps especially. While I agree that there are many times of switches and all should be compared, it should be noted that many less people will have experience with said switches, and it would be ridiculous to name every single switch type. If it help your concerns, however, I will be sorting out the entries to the "other" section and showing them as their own responses in the final summary. For example if you responded "Black Alps, White Alps", I'll show both separately in the final visuals of the responses. Like Wildcard said, this is just a starting point, so obviously there are improvements that can be made.

With that said, I appreciate the input and that you've put thought into what you've said, because it makes improving future surveys more useful :))

Perhaps it would be simpler to create a separate "vintage" survey for keyboard enthusiasts who prefer gear that has not been in production in recent years.

IBM may not have manufactured keyboards during the lifetime of a quarter of the members here, and a buyer shopping for a current modern keyboard may have very little interest in "ancient" or "obsolete" computer equipment.

But some people might consider that far more interesting than a Cherry vs Topre discussion.

Well, there's nothing stopping us from doing another survey for vintage users, so that might be a good idea. My main fear is that data might be too scattered to be able to visualize it well due to all the variation. With that said, there are probably ways to work around the possible issues, so I encourage anyone who would be interested in that type of data to give suggestions on how such a poll should be run.

Okay, I apparently suck at filling out multi-page surveys. I've tried twice, and both times something has happened which has caused my browser to navigate away from the survey, and both times I've not been able to return to my previous spot :P

Will you please delete any entries for riotonthebay, so that I may try a third time?

I'm clearly not cut out for data entry…

Clearly, it is your Cherry keyswitches sending out spurious signals.
