Hi, i wonder if you can operate Uverse without the backup battery. I think its a waste and do get the point of having a battery. But i think i rather don't have a battery running all day and sucking power for nothing.
I tried to see if you can, but there is no seperate powersupply cord for the modem. So out of the box you only can run it with a battery in tandem.
Its amazing how many devices the modern internet needs to function.

If the battery is fully charged and not malfunctioning it only consumes a nominal amount of energy. Far less than the device itself.

It just scares me really if i see all these devises connected. But i wonder still if you can run the modem without battery at all.

Yes, there is a regular AC adapter available for the gateways. Customers who do not have the Voice service do not receive a battery back up, they just get a normal plug-in brick.

If you call support and ask very nicely, it used to be possible for them to put in an order for you to receive a power cord free of charge...I don't know if that is still the case.

But, as has been said already, the battery backup is completely harmless under normal circumstances.

Now, much like anything, they can and do fail...and like anything that plugs into the wall, it can fail pretty catastrophically. But if you're afraid of the battery backup then you probably shouldn't use any electronics at all, a toaster is far more dangerous to leave plugged in.

Nah, its more like that i don't know what it is doing. Its the first battery i use and i never seen a need for it. In this case i had no choice. I am just amazed how many things are now hooked up. As a previous DSL user i just had one modem. Now i have 5 units. But ok, 2 of them are dvr's. :)

Because they're presenting it as a standalone telephone service, even though it's internally VOIP, they enter a interesting regulatory zone.  Phone service in the US is surprisingly regulated for things like "it has to be able to keep operating in the event of a power cut" and throwing a battery in the device meets their requirements for that.

Cable-company box here is the same deal; the old "internet-only" box was half the size as the "internet+phone" box which has a battery inside.
