Double Broken Duckys
« on: Fri, 02 May 2014, 17:15:02 »

Hi guys!

So i'm having a bit of an off day today. Cleaning my desk and spilled tea all over my Ducky Shine 3  :(  So I've disassembled that and leaving it someplace warm for now and will later follow one of the many guides on solving that. As of right now it won't even power on. So hopefully when it dries maybe i'll just need to replace a few switches or something.

But then I plugged in my older Ducky Sine 2 (With Browns, which feel pretty gross after using Blues). It was working fine for a little while, and then whilst mashing some keys in a game, it suddenly powered off, With one key being registered as held down indefinitely. I unplugged it and plugged it back in, tried another USB slot and nothing would work. I took it apart and thought I could smell burning, however as I said it's an older keyboard that's been left in a box for a while so it could have just been dust caught in the power slot. Gave it a little brush down and nothing working, until, whilst plugged, I removed the 5 pin connector between the USB and the PCB, and then when I put it back, back it came, and as of right now it's all working fine.

Any ideas what could have caused it to shut off and die? I thought maybe it had worked lose, but they're held down with sticky tape so pretty sure that's not it.

If I can't get my Shine 3 back working looks like I have an excuse to buy a new board!  ;D

Thanks.

sounds like the second shorted which you apparently corrected. Did that keyboard ever come into contact with liquids too, or is it very dirty?

Thanks for the reply.

When it first happened I tried the second keyboard with the cable from the first, so it's entirely possible that it was slightly wet. On reflection was quite a bad idea I suppose x)

Though I have noticed that, when the cable is fully inserted into the keyboard, it shuts off, it only stays on with the cable approximately 90% inserted.

The cable is for a Shine 3, and it's a Shine 2 currently in use. My only thought is if maybe they charged the size of the Mini USB on the Shine 3, but this seems incredibly unlikely and even so, I don't see why it would cause this to happen.

Mini USB is a standard - all mini USB plugs should be exactly the same size and shape.

Although it is possible for some to have longer contacts - you could try pushing the plug all the way in, then pull it slightly back out.  I've had standard USB plugs that won't work pushed all teh way in, but work pulled part way out.

It's pretty temperamental. When pushed fully in, I get USB Device Not Recognized. Never had this issue before so a little weird. But managed to get it going again. As you said, it could be slightly out of position contacts when fully inserted, so it's drawing power but not managing to send data efficiently enough?

As for the tea damage, my Shine 3 seems proper ballsed up. Won't even turn on which seems like a pretty bad omen.

Although looks like a good excuse to buy a Ducky 9008P Premier without feeling guilty / getting girlfriend aggro!

Could be - I'd suggest trying a second USB cable, and maybe a different USB port on the computer.

The tea - did it have sugar in it?  Did it get inside the switches?  If yes to both, the switches will probably jam up and you're up for replacing them anyway.

The Tea did have Sugar in it. God damn my Britishness!

However, after some serious amount of cable wiggling, i've actually managed to power on my Tea covered Shine 3 and the Shine 2. As of right now I don't have a spare Mini USB to test, but it looks possible that I might just have 2 defective cables.

The Shine 2 cable is a few years old, has been thrown around, pulled out more viciously than it probably should, and it was covered in tea so I can understand why that may not work. The Shine 3 cable has never before been used (as when I got the Shine 3 I just replaced the Shine 2 and left the cable already plugged in) so possible that it's just faulty. Same as the Shine 2, it needs to be plugged in approximately 80-90% of the way, once it's fully inserted it shuts off.

I need to give the Shine 3 a proper clean to see if any of the switches are buggered, (and also it's pretty filthy, probably belongs in the dirty thread), but so far that's a good start.

Thanks for your help guys :)
