55g HHKB2 Mod
« on: Tue, 24 June 2014, 06:21:59 »
Yo guys,

I've decided to keep my HHKB2 because the I really like the layout but is there any way of modding the HHKB2 to increase the weight? Are there any springs or anything like that I can buy?

Thanks in advance

I think most people use a Real Force 55g tkl to harvest the domes.

I don't think you can just use the springs.

Ugh, guess i'll just have to stick to using the 45g domes then, they're just way tooooo light, can't feel the rubber goodness.

I modded my leopold fc660c with the 55g domes.

It does feel nice. It feels more tactile.

I had to remove an extra spring out of the spacebar though. I didn't know it was there till I put the 55g domes.

Is it hard to do?

I kind of winged it. There might be a standard way to do it, though.

I just took both cases apart. Unscrewed the support screws on both cases. Then swapped the domes. I didn't swap the springs. The springs are the same weight.

I had to manually aim on where the domes should align when swapping domes. That was the hard part. I don't know if there is an easier way.

It took about 3 hours to do at max.

If you keep the hhkb upside-down then you can just lay the domes in the top of the case. Should keep everything aligned for you.

This is the proper way to do it. It insures that everything is lined up properly and that you won't be putting any screws through that precious cup rubber. It's not hard to do at all and only took me a little over an hours because I did it the wrong way first.

Hey guy!

I know the RF is expensive, but if you can get your hands on one it's totally worth it.

Excellent article!
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada
