Remapping muhenkan / Japanese keys in OSX?
« on: Wed, 16 July 2014, 17:01:01 »
I just picked up an original PS2 rubber dome HHKB (thread here: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60692.msg1403730#new). However, the meta keys apparently send a Japanese "muhenkan" scan code, which KeyRemap4MacBook doesn't recognize at all. So, I'm trying to figure out how to remap it into something useful. I've poked thru KeyRemap and tried setting it up as a JIS keyboard. No luck. Anyone know how to remap these keys?

Have you tried using Soarer's Converter?  Looks like the original keyboard was PS/2, so you can remap all of the keys with that and you shouldn't need to use remapping software either. Haven't heard much about them being used for international scan codes, but it should still work in theory.  Worth looking into anyway.

I have not. Good idea, but I am hoping to solve it through software. I emailed the developer of KeyRemap4MacBook; let's see what he says.

Did you try the different dip switch combinations, maybe that might change muhenkan to command?

Check your sw setting. Use 0 or 3. BTW, Muhenkan=無変換

Install Seil.

Then enable "Enable NFER key on PC keyboard" setting that is in the bottom of Preferences.

I tried this, and it did not work. He thinks it's because my PS2-->USB adapter is dropping the muhenkan scan code. I will try another adapter soon and post the results.
